Is the safety off or on?

 

It is in the on (up) position. Everything else on the rifle seems to be in functional shape although the the piston under the forearm cover is a bit tight when removing. Everything was well oiled with no signs of rust/corrosion. I just WD-40'd the area around the trigger and will try again in the next couple of days.

 

No other comments?

 

I have found that you have to push the release quite hard I usually use a cartridge, bullet tip,

 

OK.....After a few days of soaking with WD40 and bit of muscle and jiggling the trigger popped out without too much more fanfare (it may have worked a few days before if I jiggled it just right). Put the standard 10 rd mag back in place and had to muscle and jiggle a bit more to get it locked frimly in place. The release button on this was one stiff mutha! Afterwards I did the obligatory standard basic upgrades of a Murray's firing pin install along with a Buffer Technolgies buffer. It is one nice little rifle to shoulder. It's like the jeep of firearms - solid with it's own rugged inner beauty.

 

I use a vise to provide the necessary pressure on the trigger release pin.

 

Have seen people damage the safety when not in the right position trying to install and remove. Sounds like it is all well and fixed now. Vice, punch and hammer good advice!

if the trigger guard spring is missing it will be harder to remove than one that has the spring installed.

mine had a missing trigger guard spring and it was a beach to remove the trigger group but once I installed a spring the trigger group comes out much easier now. a good solid bump with a Phillips head screw driver or a pin punch on the take down latch will make it jump right out of the receiver.

 

I had no trouble getting mine out of my Yugo, but putting it back in was no walk in the park. Needless to say I haven't taken it out since (4 months).

Hold it in the vise upside down. Put one hand underneath to keep the action and stock from seperating. Position the magazine properly in its place. Place the trigger group in position for installation. Hold the action and stock together with one hand and with the trigger group in place, whack on the trigger guard with a plastic (or brass) hammer until the trigger group locks into place. one or two whacks should do it.

 

Just something about using a hammer on a firearm that bothers me. I've done it, but I've never been comfortable with it. You should have seen me with my brand new Ruger Mark III trying to remove the barrel group from the frame the first time. A plastic dead blow works pretty well for that but I still don't like doing it.

Hammer and pin punches is standard tools working on firearms.
a good ball peen and a dead blow with replaceable heads should be in any gunsmiths toolbox.

 

Yep I know, but there's just something wrong with having to whack a brand new firearm with a hammer. Again I've done it but still don't like doing it. The hammer is always my last resort.

The release for the trigger is a clip and sort of needs to be pushed in towards the rear of the trigger gaurd not so much down. If you safety is in the wrong position it should not come out no what you do. Be careful place the rifle on a hard working surface (example I can't get mine out by sitting it on mat on my bench I just use a thin towel under the gun between the bench).
