Hey Guys,

I am looking for recommendations on slings for the Mini 14. Most of my experience has been with the military M16 style sling and using them for hasty shooting assistance as well as carrying. What are your opinions on the all around best options for the Mini and where to purchase?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure what kind of sling you are wanting as there are so many options. Check the " CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SLING IN ACTION " video. Looks interesting.

I use a 1 1/4" leather military style sling from Hillside leather which did require wider sling swivels. Am considering one of the montana slings due to ease of adjustability.

If the OP is looking for an M16-style sling with the clip on one end and the clamp on the other, it can be found at:

This is what I trained with in the Corps. It is 1.25" so buyer beware, modifications may be needed.

At $12 bucks you can't go wrong!

Hotlead, the photo is a little dark, but your front swivel looks like the ones I use, a TOC Talon QD; mine is s/s. It is for a 1" wide sling, and is a good swivel.
Both swivels are the ones Bill Ruger himself put that rifle in 1976, straight OEM.

Thanks, Oathkeeper.

A consideration when selecting a sling for any semi-auto

I've never done this as an experiment, for the obvious reason, but has anyone ever accidentally let a nylon sling touch the barrel on their Mini after getting it good and hot? I've always assumed it would melt it, so I use a basic canvas sling. Of course a leather sling wouldn't have this potential problem either. I say "potential" only because I don't know that some "nylon" type slings aren't made with heat resistant material. I do know from experience how easy it is to melt nylon rope.

My favorite slings are the following Outdoor Connection, Inc. slings (in order of preference):
  • The Super-Sling 2+
  • The Original Padded Super-Sling
  • The Original Super-Sling

Right now, Walmart is selling the Super-Sling 2+ under the Winchester brand name. It's going for $17, and there are different colors to choose from. In fact, I bought a Real-Woods style yesterday.

The best part about these slings is their ease of adjustment. The thumb hole loop makes it possible to adjust the sling in a matter of seconds. And, shortening it for storage is a breeze.

NOTE: If you want to use the quick detachable sling mounts with the factory Mini gas block, you will have to modify the gas block slightly. I've done this "mod" and love it. I think it's well worth the effort. Here's a link that explains the process:

If this "mod" is not up your alley, you could simply use the 1" sling and route the nylon strap through the factory sling swivels.

In fact, I've done this (with the 1 1/4" sling) on both my M1A and my father's M1 Garand. The sling functions just as well as it does with the QD swivels.

I'm in the process of putting these Outdoor Connection slings on most all my rifles. The features, plus the price can't be beat.

Just my two cents...

i love the standard butler creek sling. it goes perfect with my tapco mini and its about 17 bucks from miday USA. Its very comfortable and locks goods with the sling mounts.
I bought (by mistake from Cabela's) a Butler Creek Quick Carry with sewn in QD swivels, so I couldn't use it with the Mini's fixed swivels. I don't want to change the studs.

Has anybody tried this one, or others, from Specter Gear?

Looks like they make some nice stuff and it can be got for less at other sites.

Thanks, bwraven. Good testimonial.

Can it be used like a web sling with the Mini's swivels (without the wrap-around attachments)? It looks like it's 1.25". I don't understand why Ruger used 1" fixed swivels. I know it's a Mini but they didn't have to apply the concept to everything.
