I've only owned one Chinese Norinco SKS that takes AK mags (registered AW here in CA). Its one of 3 legally registered in CA. It has worked flawlessly with just about ever AK mag I've thrown at it. I bought it in the late to mid 80's I think.
I just put a TAPCO stock another of my Chinese SKS's (standard mags style)and boy did it make it a shooter for me. The adjsutable length of pull solved LOTS of my problems with the short SKS stock (I'm 6'3"). Now if I can only get it to gundoc for that barrel mod...

Well looks like I will be eating my own words. Picked two brand new unissued chinese sks rifles froman older guy today. Guns have not been fired still have brown cosmo and one has the sales tag attached to barrel with bayonet. One has the triangle with the chnese writing the other does not have the triangle? Both have bayonets and cleaning kits. Came with extra chinese sks fixed mag, chest pouch and detachable mag. Only bad thing I dont have a single round of 7.62x39mm in the house. Oh well for $350 seemed like a good deal.Let everyone know how they shoot when I get some ammo.

Galaxie 5000,
'Roger' your favorite guns.
My Mini 14, 30 and new SKS (plus Mosin 44) are all favorites.
Boogeyman:
At that show, did the info on the increased importation of 7.62x39 have a reliable source in the distributor/wholesale sector of the business, by chance?
Wolf .223 just jumped for 1,000 rds. from $200 to about $240 over the last two weeks, so I decided to pursue the Russian caliber (for Mini and SKS) instead of extra .223.
Whitewulf: I decided on two main calibers, both easy to find and used in so many types of combat rifles, plus not wanting to have all of "one's eggs in just one basket".
Other than a good deal on a used Mini 14 ("GunBroker.com" has four full pages of them...), an unused SKS would be my decision.
If not, how about the Saiga? And the Wolf x39 ammo has not really had a price increase in months.

I've owned only 1 SKS a Russki IIRC maybe Bulgi. it shot fine but didn't 'come to shoulder' too well. a couple buddys have Russki and Hungarian, I cleaned 'em up, recrowned muzzle, cleaned up trigger and did the magazine rework. they shoot good. basically a semi-auto 30-30. still effective and likely as accurate as your average AR out to 200 yards. beyond that lots of drop.

Hungary and Bulgaria never exported any here, if they built any at all.

I think it depends on what you want out of it. As a rifle in and of itself it is better than 99% of the AKs out there. Is the low capacity an issue? Yes; however, if one gets good with stripper clips it is a non issue. Plus one can carry more clips than magazines. Is it a problem that I can’t lay down mass fire with it to disperse a crowd in SHTF? Maybe. But I have other magazine fed weapons for that and to be honest once you get past blasting through magazine number one and maybe two you are really red lining your rifle to the point if damage. So does it really matter the SKS doesn’t have 30 capacity? Not really. Especially if you are operating with buddies and are good with clips. I’d take the quality and accuracy over an AK any day. It’s my number 2 rifle anyway. My go to is an M14 but the SKS fills a nitch.

*Can* an SKS be used effectively?
Sure... So can a 98k, lever action 30-30, or black powder rifle.
It's still obsolete.

only as a military weapon...........
I have a nice Romini that's de-lugged and has a 5 round wooden plug I can install for hunting in "management areas"
it's a great mid range hunting rifle.

Since Im at the revival....
No way my Chi-com SKS will outshoot my new WASR-10. No way I would rather have a 10rd mag loaded with stripper clips over a 30rd magazine. No way I would rather lug around a heavier SKS over a lighter and shorter AK. Other than that I have owned my SKS for 25+years and love it but its no AK.

The thump thump of the recoil pulse is in sync and fits perfectly with my reflex for re sighting. This is my favorite rifle to get hot with impressive rapid fire groupings. Easily modified for 20 round mag fitment. Some winter I'll put the bullpup stock on it and I'm sure it will be a kick ass system.

My Norinco SKS has a fixed 20 rd magazine made by Norinco. It's 100 percent. I feel just as well armed with it as I do with either of my AKS (both Norinco)
If I don't have time to drop a stripper clip into the magazine after firing 20 rounds, then shame on me.

i'm never planning on using mine for combat......I ground the bayonet lug off, and made a 5 round plug for the magazine so I can hunt even the most restrictive Management Areas in the state with it.
Open sight at 100 yards will pop a pie plate every time I pull the trigger.
If it gets scratched or dinged on a tree in the woods, so what, it's a beater that shoots sweet with cheap Russian ammo all day long.
I keep the cleaning kit, rod, and sling all in/on the rifle so it's my crappy weather, slip in mud hunter......that I paid $119 for 20+ years ago

Another great reason I love it, it eats anything from Lacquer finished steel, to brass never a hiccup , thump thump thump, I might have to go shoot her now. I went to a gun show back in the 90's and on the last day dealers were dumping inventory, I could have bought the MAK 90 paratrooper for $80.00 bucks dealers had stacks of them mostly Norinco versions. Woulda shoulda coulda! I was afraid the wife would yell at me for spending eighty bucks.

I think anyone who collects guns should add an SKS if (financially) possible, but for practical reasons there are much better semiauto rifles, including the AK and AR, with prices these days not that much higher.
As for a rifle though, the SKS is easy shooting, can be fairly accurate, reliable, and has plenty of power. And it shoots a widely available and relatively inexpensive round. It is good especially if you prefer a traditional style stock set-up. I would pick up another one if I run across a good deal, but I have been around long enough that today's $450 price tag just seems high to me.
