On Ruger's centerfire autoloading rifle web page (here), they breathlessly announce "Features like integral scope bases, free Ruger scope rings, a patented recoil buffer and side ejection are still standard on all Ruger Ranch Rifles." What, exactly, is this patented recoil buffer? The op rod just whacks the receiver, does it not? It's just ad copy of course, but still, I wonder.

All Ranch models do have the recoil buffer. It is susposed to disperse rearward force into a radial pattern. It doesn't work very well. It consists of the buffer guide rod, buffer bushing, and buffer cross pin.
