Unhappy I have a sickness...

It is called "Mini-14stuffacquisitionitus" Found a really clean early Mini-15 carbine style stock for $89 with fittings to put the 581 in. I like the shorter length of pull and lighter weight of the early Mini-stocks. I just wish I had been able to fing this good a deal on an early one back when I bought the modern wood stock.

Oh well, I can sell the modern one. It is mint still, so maybe get most of my money from it.

The older stocks are great, I don't find the new style stocks to be an improvement.
The shorter LOP is much more versatile and adaptable to unorthodox positions and angles, and heavier clothing.

Off topic, but man I love that picture, I miss shooting in the west. Around here I can walk to anything I can see in five minutes or less. When I was a kid in the California desert I gave jack rabbits hell with an old Winchester model 63. Thanks for bringing back that memory, I needed it.

I do not have a problem. I am not an addict. I can quit anytime that I want to. I do not need an intervention. I am perfectly fine. I do not need to buy another ...... Wait! Did you just say that you have a gun for sale? What make and model. What caliber.? What condition and price? I can still quit at any time, but when can I take a look at it?

I went to a swap meet today and scored TWO old style Mini wood stocks.
I don't need one at present but knew that others here might be looking for one.
I'm going to put them in the classifieds here and on rugerforum.net.

One is darker Birch, nice shape with a stainless swivel, no mag reinforcement hardware and a glossier finish.
Other is a lighter Birch, has a blued swivel and a few small dings here and there, duller finish no mag reinforcement hardware with it either.
I'm sure the previous owners swapped the reinforcement bracket and screws over to whatever crappy aftermarket stock they bought.
I could change out the swivel if someone had a preference of blued vs SS.
If anyone is interested PM me.

I got my old style stock and it is about mint. WOW!, talk about a tight fit, there is no shimming needed. The reenforcement bracket was the snuggest of any Mini I have ever had! Looks great. The wood grain doesn't look like birch, but maybe light walnut, maybe heart wood. I had an M1 carbine that was walnut heart wood and it looked the same. I'll do some pictures.

My 10-22 (from 1973) has a walnut stock. When did they switch to Birch from Walnut on the Mini-14. My 1976 180 series was Walnut.

Heres the 181 stock compared to 580 stock. Notice the completely different grain structure. The color is about birch, but the grain and dark highlights don't look right. With a bad picture, the stock looks like grim, but it is mint and smooth...

Years ago my buddy had a beautiful Mini-30 with a stock that a wood guy swore was cherry wood.

I'd bet $20 that is a walnut stock Ima. I am a cabinetmaker/woodworker by trade.

Birch typically doesn't have figuring like that.

I think you are right. It looks just like my 1973 10-22 walnut stock. I’ll have to grab it out of the other safe and compa

The weight of the the 2 stocks should be very different since walnut is considerably heavier.
