In between hikes and plinking, I've been watching a lot of History Channel shows the last few days. There was a good one about the Battle of Midway yesterday.

In my entire life (including 22+ years in the active Army), I am fortunate to have only lost one close friend to combat: LTC (posthumously promoted to COL) Dave Scales; killed on 9/11 at the Pentagon. But for the grace of God, I would have been there with him for an innocuous personnel meeting that also took the life of the Army's DCSPER (G-1)...

So this is a day very personally devoted to him, a loving father and husband, a loving friend, and one of the best humans I ever knew. We were smoking buddies, so we had lots of time to chat on things other than the job out in the "smoking area". I'd known him for several years and he was like a very close brother.

Their faces stay in my mind , but I lost a few close to me , the CH 46 was a shtt med lift aircraft . Two miles of hydraulic lines , all integral with no redundancy , and composite external construction . Anyway hand salute to the souls we all knew who served and were our friends and buddies .

Let us be truly thankful for the sacrifices of others. I've lost close friends in battle, and I am alive today due to the heroic acts of others. I am both humbled and honored deeply to call them my brothers.
What a nation, that we produce MEN such as these.....
