Picked up a gem

Yesterday I sold a few guns to fund the purchase of a 182 series "pre-ban" factory folder, with 4 mags and bayonet.
I may have overpaid if you consider what I gave the guy, but my actual out of pocket was much less. Anyhow, I got it from the original owner, who is climbing in years and has Noone to pass things on to. It's clean. Real clean. It's been shot, but not much. I have owned a BUNCH of guns and this is hands down my greatest purchase. I have written Ruger to get the factory info on this gun. I'll have questions (like when did they start/stop with Leo markings) I'm sure, in the meantime, enjoy.

Nice buy! By the pics, it looks to be a GB model, which purportedly used the best of the barrels coming off the assembly line. I have a 181GB built in 1977 (first year of 181 production) and it is a shooter. A letter to Ruger confirmed its month of manufacture. While it had a folder (Choate) when I bought it in 1980, it left the factory as a non-folder. Subsequent reseach indicated that the placement of the front sling-swivel is the primary determinant as to if it left the factory as a folder or not (side-mounted says "yes", underside-mounted says "no").

Five years ago, I had no idea of the distinction; all I knew was that I loved my 181 Mini-GB. That love has not diminished one bit!

Thanks. I'm pretty stoked. I think this is the first blued folder I have seen in person, configured like this.

I'm not sure that this is an original GB. The front sight doesn't appear to be correct for a 182 series. Also, it is not clear if the front gas block sling attachment is a side attachment, which a factory folder would have. Not to say that this isnt a good carbine for you.

It's definitely a side sling gas block and these sights have matched every threaded barrel, GB sight w/bayo lug that I have seen. Just waiting on my letter from Ruger to verify and confirm

Good for you. My phone is fuzzing out the photos when i expand them, and the critical areas i mentioned are unclear. My ( phones) bad. That is certainly a nice score. I foolishly sold off the one i had about 20 yrs. ago. But back then they were not as hard to get. Best wishes.

Well, got my letter from Ruger. It confirms that this is a 1980 Mini-14/20GB-F shipped to Law Enforcement Equipment in August of 80.

I'm quite happy with the resukt

I'll have to settle for my Butler Creek folding stock until I can get my hands on one of those. Great find!
