Rail suggestions for 1982 Mini 14

My brother just purchased a 1982 Mini 14 and is wants to install a Vortex Crossfire red dot. I believe the Ultimak and Amega are probably the best rails out there. But since he will only be using it for fairly short range target practice occasionally, I don't think he will like the price. Are there less expensive options?
Thanks

Correction: I double checked the serial number and it appears to be a 1981 model.

I have both rails you mention and I prefer the Ultimak as its rail sits lower to the barrel than the Amega. Having your optic sit closer to the barrel is almost always better as you will be able to use a normal cheek weld on the stock verses a chin weld or having to use a cheek pad.

I have a 182 series from 1981. Prior to its re-barrel I ran an amega ranges mount. The amega is sitting in drawer in the fun room. If interested in details message me.
