Talking Found it!

Went to a gun show on Saturday here in Northern Utah. Stopped by because my brother was there selling bullets. Figured while I was there, I would wander around and see what was going on.

Two tables down from him, I happened upon a Deerfield Carbine with three magazines! In fact, that is the first and only one I have ever laid eyes on!

Now, for those of you in the South or the East, that may not be quite the unicorn that it seems to be out here. Folks around here like to brag about how long the shot was on their last deer, and since PRS has taken off, anything shorter than a half mile seems to just get laughed at. I am not quite sure when hunting became sniping.....

Oh well. That is another subject.

The Deerfield! My heart sank when the nice smiling gentleman sitting behind the table told me he was would be willing to part with his treasure for a mere $950. Luckily for me, I do not dissemble well, and he recognized my disappointment. Upon declaring that he would throw in 750 rds of factory ammunition (it just happened to be American Eagle 240gr JHP), I immediately agreed!

A short while (and one newly emptied ATM) later, and I was happily transporting my new rifle home while grinning ear to ear!

Now, if I can just manage to wrangle some range time to try it out.....

That's the newer incarnation of the old Ruger .44 Mag. carbine, correct ?
My brother had one of those when he lived in central Texas. It was the hammer of Thor on the smallish Whitetails there.
One thing I didn't like was the internal tube mag that only held 4 rounds. Having detachable mags would be a plus.

Yeah, it is the new version that is based on the Mini-14 action. Honestly, that is why I have been trying to get ahold of one.
It uses a four round removable rotary magazine, and it is supposed to have a slightly tighter twist rate than the older version, to better stabilize the heavier 300gr bullets.
I like to think of it as an even bigger bore Mini-30.

Bought one new in the 80's never had to use more then one round on a deer.
Bought it so I had rifle and pistol in the same caliber.
Sold the three screw blackhawk and the rifle to a friend, been trying to buy them both back for years but no luck. I've come to the realization he will have to kickoff before me to get them back. Dumb move on my part. He never had the blackhawk up graded.

I have had one for 5 or 6 years. I've found that mine is more accurate at 100yds than any of my mini 14s. It's a big improvement over the 44 mag. carbines made in the 70s and 80s. I don't think a lot of shooters are even aware of them.

Nice find! I've always liked that incarnation of Ruger's 44 Mag Carbine. It feels somewhat like a 10/22 for big boys with that removable magazine.

Some years ago I was deciding whether to standardize wheel guns and pistol caliber carbines to 44 Mag or 357 Mag. The Deerfield 44 made me stop and think a little longer, but I went with 357 Mag. I've got good choices in lever-action and slide-action carbines. Unfortunately nothing from Ruger.

I don't have anything else in 44 Mag, but that carbine is still tempting.

You got a heck of a deal. The factory ammo alone is worth $500. Yep, I would have been all over that deal. Good for you!
