30-06 cuz that's what I have an with federal 220gr.you could take down rabbits all day with ease.
But for real my old rugar M-77 has seemed more than enough rifle for pretty much anything in the USA especially with custom hand loads. The ammo is cheaper an its everywhere you go....

I have a reworked .270 Win in a Voere rifle reworked by KDF. Knowing that the guarantee of 1/2 inch groups of 3 shots is truly the "RealDeal".
I have seen targets of a 25-06 ... The guy shooting it was a sorcerer/Magician in grouping cloverleafs.
Don't know if anyone needs that precise accuracy . But it gave me a whole new perspective on that. 25 cal.

30-06, because that is America's Caliber.
Besides, that's what goes in my M1 Garand, M1903A3, and Remington 7400.

I actually prefer 7.92X57JS, aka 8MM Mauser.

Grew up in Colorado my first rifle was a 30/30 and I hunted with that till I was 22. I decided to get a M700 in .270 win. with a Leupold M8 4x scope. This rifle is still very accurate. I took big mule deer, big elk and a couple of antelope. None of them took more than 1 round. I'll only take partial credit for placement the rest I give to the cartridge for it's performance upon impact. The last bull I took was at 350 paces across my favorite opening I used to sit on for the evening. One shot in the heart. Hit him so hard it dislocated the shoulder. This is at about 9k feet in elevation and it's cold, the ground is frozen hard with about 4" of skiff snow The next morning I retraced the bulls last few steps out into my clearing and I saw where he was standing when the bullet hit him. The 150 grain Nosler hit him so hard it drove his feet about 6" down into frozen ground. The .270 is a giant killer!
