Hornady American dies 2018 version

Now and then I will buy a set of dies when I do not have a gun to go with the set. I was thinking about building a 270 for myself. I was very surprised when I received the new two die set I ordered, made by Hornady American, no box, just a clear plastic hang tag sort of thing like you might see in a box store holding small amounts of screws or bolts.

If you own old Hornady dies do not expect the new dies to look or function like your old dies. The Sizer die has no flats on the sides at the top for a wrench, the recapping rod does not have a slot for a screw driver, the rod is knurled at the top for fingers. The body has a thin rubber ring under the locking ring to “lock” it in the press. The die body is burnished steel, smooth top to bottom no knurling. Setting up and locking the die for a specific sizing length may not be in the cards for this sizing die. The expander ball is not well tapered, it just has a lump, not made for a smooth transition from a smaller to larger caliber as I found out by accident. These 270 dies came with a .305 expander ball, should be a .273. The 305 destroyed 4 fired cases before I figured out it was not the die body that was screwed up, causing the neck to be off center. My RCBS 30-06 dies will expand and FL size a 270 fired case with one pass, just trim.

I am allowing Natchez to replace the ball, they just called to tell me Hornady is sending me a new expander ball. Now I will run the ball on my lathe.

Look at them before you buy.

I will have to go down to the shop to look in the can, all I recall is that they are the new Hornady American dies.

The fun continues. Once I got the new expander ball installed, I put the new free shell holder that came in the die pack in the Rock Chucker, deprived and sized 4 cases before the decapping rod bent. Stop the presses, straighten rod, replace pin, finish the 24 pieces of brass. Try to change RCBS automprime from SR to LR using the free shell holder, the RCBS priming rod did not fit, hole in shell holder is off center. RCBS #2 shell holder fit perfectly and worked perfectly, obvious cause of bent rod, crappy free shell holder. I tossed the whole Hornady American die mess in the can, got a RCBS die set.

Now Hornady makes some good reloading stuff, never had a problem before, but this die set is not even close to their normal quality.

Checked them and they are an American Series die set.

I also decided to run the little batch of brass through the RCBS dies with an RCBS shell holder. Very interesting, there is a noticeable, with the naked eye, difference, plus it felt like the neck, shoulder and web were resized all over again. Example the mark on the web was less than half the height above the extractor recess. This brass might actually fit in a chamber.
