T20 garand build

Right now Iím involved in a unsporterizing?ó remilitarizing? build of my 1930ís vintage 03 Springfield sporter but after thats done I want to try to do a T20 Garand build using a mini14 donor rebarreled to .300 blkout. Anyone in the Garand forum have any knowledge or firsthand interaction with this interesting version of the Garand?

I don't, but it sounds like a plan to me.

Getting ready to ship my donor mini14 to Accuracy Systems for a 24 inch .300 Blkout bbl install. Then I’ll see how i can make the barreled action fit into my garand stock. As the mini 14 action is 2/3 the size of a garand I’ll need to shorten the stock, handguards and bbl to keep the rifle somewhat proportional. I’ll do alot of what I did on my mini30/M1a build’s stock. While I painted my mini/M1a camo I don’t want to paint my mini/garand stock to hide my jbweld and filler blocks. I might have to use my fitted stock as a pattern and have a second one made without the modding. Thinking out loud.

Update—parts are sent. I think that I’m going to try to make one of these to go on my barrel / gas cylinder.

I for one would like to know your progress. I sent an Mini 6.8 to ASI a few years back. They do good work.

They did a nice job on my mini30/m1a build but it was expensive. I’m spending my son’s inheritance. And loving it.

Started working on my T20 muzzle break today. The only thing I can do until ASI returns my barreled action. I figured out a way to cut the inside concave radius of the weird break. The proper way would be to start with a nice piece of 2 in bar stock in a big machine lathe. But lacking the skill, knowledge, a machine lathe and not wanting to tie up a bunch more money in machine shop work on a purely cosmetic part I’ve come up with a way to use my mini mill. I’ll post a picture tomorrow, a lot easied than tryin to ‘splain it. I’m sure a lot of our member machinists will scratch their heads and think ‘what are you doing, Bubba?’ I wanted a piece of 5/8 material but my local fab shop didn’t have any except hardened so I got a 1/2 in chunk of free scrap. This may be a try piece, hope not. The outside radius will be easy, put it on a mandrill and chuck it in my drill. Use my assorted belt sanders to shape it.

Got the bowl part done but now I need to machine/drill the slots in the adapter body. Not knowing how hard it is and I might ruin it and not be able to use it so I’m dragging my feet on cutting the flat on the bottom of the bowl just in case the replacement’s muzzle thread orientation is different as I’ve tapped my bowl 5/8x24. Needed to do that in in order to turn it on my mill. My build is not going to be select fire so the brake is not going to do anything plus the rifle muzzle should extend slightly past the cut out. The original brakes were longer.

My mini is still at Accuracy Systems as of 1-4-19. Waiting but Iíve got other projects going on.

Still there as of 3-6-19. Picked up a nice garand gas tube and op rod.

Mine took eight months to get done. Was a long wait.

Finally got my bbled action back from AS. Started inletting it into an ugly garand stock. Got it inlet but had a brain fade and forgot about the metal insert. Duh. As it is right now it’s actually tighter in my stock than it was in the metal insert with the insert screwed in the ruger stock. I might try to shoot it to see what happens to my inletting work. I have a second stock if this one doesn’t work out.

I tried shooting a couple of rds just to see what would happen to my stock. I duck taped the bolt so that it couldn’t unlock [no op rod installed] and with just the trigger assembly holding it. I didn’t see anything damaged. I think that I don’t need the metal insert with the tighter fitting stock. Heres what my stock looks like. We’ll see.

Here it is cobbled together. Cut the mini 14 op rod down on my mill to get it to fit the garand stock. The bad gas cylinder [ducktaped it to the bbl] has no splines and just slides on my AS bbl. I hand cycled 8 rds through it and hit my cowboy steel fine. Found out that a ruger factory 300blkout mag will fit in the magwell and lock in place with only the rear mag lock. The 8 rds fed fine and follower locked the bolt. Got a lot of wood and metal work to go but it’s coming along.

Woodwork is coming along but have hit a snag on my bbl. Ruffs won’t do my bbl. Thought they could do it but it turns out they’re a one trick pony and don’t have the time or skills to do their magic on a non garand bbl. Their tools are set up for the exact profile of the M1 bbl and they won’t do anything else. Tried Fulton arms and no luck. Anyone know of a machinist with M1 talents?
May have found a semi local machinist, [2hr drive] who will look at my project to see if he can do it. Might try to drive to Raleigh this week.

I’ve been working on an ‘02 Tj wrangler that I bought in June so my gun builds have fallen by the wayside. Maybe by next month I can get back on them. The excessive heat has kept my indoors and out of my shop too.

9-10. Still working on my Tj but it’s getting closer to done. Being undercoated now, tonneau about done, a few more small projects and a full paint job in the fall.

I have my rifle at a smith who is machining the bbl for the gas cylinder. Hopefully he knows what he’s doing. Once he gets that done then we’ll figure out the op rods. The size of the gas port will be a guess so we’ll start with a 300 blkout holes dimension and go from there.

My Tjís tonneau is built, will paint when I get the whole Tj painted next month. Been working on building cases and loads for a Martini .310/.32-20 Cadet and a 7.65 mannlicher 1901 pistol. Both old antiques. The photo of the mannlicher isnít of my mannlicher but mine is almost that nice and I also have a holster.

Finally got some progress to report. I found a local smith to do my gas cylinder bbl work. Next week I go see him and plan the next steps. Should be the op rod mods and install. I drug my AR 300blkout out of the safe and have started working up some loads. I don’t know how well they’ll transpose from the AR to the mini garand but you’ve got to start somewhere.
