My five choices

I can't imagine having only 5 guns, any more than I could imagine having only 5 woodworking tools. However ... given a scenario where five is all I can take with me:

Battle rifle - an LR308 or equivalent with an 18" or 20" barrel. I don't currently have one; that will probably be my next build.

Why not a Mini-14 or AR15? Terminal ballistics. 5.56mm is fine for armies and folks who can afford to have a rail car full of ammo following them around. I don't want to have to put a half-dozen rounds into a predator in order to subdue it. Moreover, soft points only. I wouldn't hunt with ball, and if I actually end up needing this for defense against two-legged predators, Hague and Geneva will have become meaningless.

Hunting rifle, small game - I have really liked the 10-22s I've owned at various times; but in a pinch, I'd prefer to rely on a tube-magazine bolt rifle such as the Marlin n80 (where "n" = any digit from none to 9). If by some miracle the magazine were damaged (no small task), it could still easily be used as a single shot (try that with a 10-22 - doable, but not fun).

Hunting rifle, large game - Yes, I could use the LR308, but a bolt or lever action rifle is lighter, and will suffice unless there are also numerous large predators afield. Preferred cal. is .30, but .243 or 7-08 would be fine. Options I would consider include, in no particular order, a Marlin 336, a Winchester m88 (out of print, but can be found), m70 Winchester, Ruger m77, or Savage m10/m11. In most cases, stainless would be a plus. Note that only the Marlin 336 can't be had in .308Win. If that's what you already have, .30-30 really is enough.

Defensive pistol - I'm a 1911 guy, through and through. Commander length (4-1/4" barrel), .45ACP. 1st choice: Ruger SR1911CMD

Practice pistol - .22LR. If I handles pretty much like your defense pistol, so much the better. I'm looking for a Ruger 22/45 (American made), but the right deal on a Colt. 1911-22 would pull me in. Browning makes a scaled-down model that is great for small hands (teaching the young 'uns to shoot) - but pricy.

Why not a shotgun? Unless you live in a heavily wooded area, a shotgun isn't an especially efficient tool. In open range, few game animals will let you get close enough to be effective. As a defensive tool, well, the ammo is heavy and bulky, and - again - the range is limited.

Got to bring your reloading equipment with when you move.

5legion you've made some good choices, everyone will have different opinions and outlooks. Here is mine from behind the reloading bench.

.308 Win M1A NM.
300 Win Mag Remington 700 5R Milspec.
12 GA Mossberg 590 Blackwater + Bayo.
44 Mag S&W 629.
44 Mag Marlin 1894.

Interchangeability on the reloading bench, and every weapon is multipurpose.
Yes I own all 5, no I could never limit myself so I have many more to keep these company. Wish you Luck, that's the 5 I'd be hardest pressed to get rid of if it was a must.

Although I have owned many different firearms, in the spirit of the question I would pick from the current firearms in my safe.

I am assuming this would be for the Zombie apocalypse.

Scoped Mini-14 Stainless chambered in .223 Rem.
Scoped PTR-91 in .308 Win.
Polish AKMS in 7.62x39 Russian
12 Ga Kel-Tec KSG with iron sights and red dot illuminated sight
Browning Hi-Power in 9mm

My choices would be based on popularity of the firearm type and ammunition availability.

If I had to run out the door with four firearms. I'd take these four, but it would be hard to leave the others behind. I believe these four would cover anything I might need to do except shooting birds in flight. Also, keeps ammo down to three common calibers.

If it were a matter of space and not an emergency, I'd take more than four.

SCAR 17 - .308 Semi-auto

2 - Custom build ARs in 5.56 - Noveske barrels and Noveske Gen 2 lowers, Vltor MUR uppers, Geissele triggers, BCM BCGs

Walther PPQ - 9mm semi-auto pistol

Yes, I already own them.

If I could take five: For SHTF another AR making 3. For just saving space, I'd take my 10/22 take down or my Sig 522.

1) Springfield emp pistol - 9mm

2) 22 rifle - Winchester 9422 or browning bl-22

3) 580+ Stainless/synthetic mini 14

4) 30-30 lever gun - Henry H009, or Savage 99H carbine

5) Kimber lightweight Bolt gun - .270 Winchester

Don't worry Pappa

Don't worry about the RAMBO TYPES Pappa, it seems that there is a large trend of folks giving up at 800 Meters. Long Range Shooting isn't what it used to be. Small game (Rodents) with massive capacity seems to be the norm. The .308 is about the Strongest/longest Cartridge listed, so there will be allot of folks using slugs in Bear Country.

1 gun is easy: Drilling, 12x12x30-06 with a 22rf insert for one barrel w/ QD optics.
3 guns also easy: 12ga O/U, 30-06 Bolt action w/optics, Rem 550-1 (22rf) w/irons
Picking 2 others would be tough, but I'd probably add a M1 Garand and a Stevens VLR to the mix (both with irons)

No offense, but no sidearms?

Note that the OP is referring to moving state to state. Not some SHTF fantasy.

Only use for a short gun is to get to the shotgun.
Never had a real love for handguns, also never had any problem one handing a shotgun either

No problem, not a SHTF fantasy here either.

At the lowest point in my life I sold down to a .38 snub and a 12 ga. The 12 ga would have been the next thing to go, since only the .38 could be concealed for self defense. Also, only the .38 could be hidden well enough in a sparse apartment to survive a burglary if I was away at work and that was a constant fear where I lived at that time. Used to keep a trigger lock on the shotty and hide it under the couch (my one piece of furniture at the time) but that wouldn't have kept it safe from even a clumsy thief. I had a much better hiding place for the .38 though.

I suspect its a difference in outlook between someone raised in the crime ridden Chicago 'burbs and somewhere a little more civilized. But for me, the one gun I'll lose last if needs be is a defensive handgun, which is why I was surprised at your list.

Best,
Grumpy

That's probably it.
I have owned a few short guns (both rollers and bottom feeders) over the years, and still have a Colt Detective Special.

A Detective Special like yours is pretty much what I regard as the ultimate personal survival gun for someone in an urban environment. Lets you keep camoflage as just an ordinary joe, can be cached easily when needed, is powerful enough to deal with 2 or 3 sharpened-screwdriver wielding thugs (who can kill you just as dead as the cannibal hordes from some TEOTWAWKI thing and unlike a fantasy thugs like that have been real for as long as I can remember), and doesn't litter up the place with brass. Best of all is that it doesn't take much hand strength so as you age you'll still be able to use it - unless you've got arthritis so bad that you can't use any gun at all.

Whatever you do, don't get rid 'a that one is my advice! Maybe some better advice would be "don't move to a crime-infested urban area" but still, you've got one of the really good ones with that Colt DS.

Best,
Grumpy

Out of what I have:

Delton Echo 316/moe with EOTech512 and Magpul BUIS

T/C Venture 30-06 5R 24" with Burris Scope

Ruger 10/22 with a Tapco stock from factory.

Remington 870 Express SuperMag 12ga

Para USA 1911 45acp

All of these guns are reliable and great shooters. I have on hand enough magazines and ammunition for all five to last me years. I have over 20 guns total and it would be hard to leave the rest but if I could have only five these would be it.

5 instead of 25.....have I left Alabama or something??
ok.....i'll play......out of my existing herd only:
1911 Commander
'59 Romini SKS
because they're totally utilitarian
Model 1873 Winchester Short Rifle .357/.38
1873 SAA clone (front sight filed for 50 yd chest shots)
because they're a lot of fun and I shoot both as if i'm reincarnated from that era....completely natural for me.
1882 N.R.Davis and Sons Steel barreled rabbit eared 12 guage coach gun
nuff said !!

That is a good selection.

If I had to limit myself to 5 they would probably be:

Ruger 10/22
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870
AR-15
Remington 700 in 308 or 270 winchester
Beretta 92f

Isn't this the Last 5 you had to give up?

Hey KEVIN, isn't this about the Last 5 you had to give up if you where moving? What is it that you wouldn't part with if everything else had to be sold? A Mossberg or Remington 2, .308 or 270 2 5legion has US.

5legion, I've got to tip my hat to you Sir. This is one of the best questions for quite sometime. Even when most of us answer with either 5 calibers or 5 firearms we add extra choices. I've even turned the question around (if I was Starting a firearms collection what would be the first 5) and I can't limit myself to 5 even then. You have effectively proven that most of us here can't limit ourselves. It is good that We don't have too, it would be difficult to live in a Country where you could only have 5 firearms. Once again Sir, Good question.
