Caliber choices for “long range” hunting

Hey guys so I recently moved to Nevada where I plan to hunt I came from ny where hunting shots were pretty much always <150 yds I am not sure the range I will be encountering in northern Nevada I’m thinkin Of buying a Weatherby vanguard to replace my 308 Ruger American I was using in NY, I’m just stuck on the caliber for the rifle the choices are 6.5 creed, 6.5-300 Weatherby, 7mm, 300 win mag, 300 Weatherby and 308 I’m not a “sniper” and am an ethical person so I wouldn’t be taking shots past my comfort range which is around 300 yard (with experience I plan to increase that distance) I know 308 would be good for that but I want to learn to reach out and touch, 308 loses its bullet expansion about 400yds... also with the bigger calibers how much worse does it wear out the barrel? I’m leaning towards 6.5 creed
