Ok guys. I need your input. My son has been doggin me ever sence I sold my Bushmaster and Armalite. He is a 12 year old boy that can out shoot most men. I have several long guns that he likes to play with but he would like to get into AR's. I do not have the $ for a top self AR and you must remember, its for a young shooter. I was looking at putting an FN, M4 upper on a ASA lower. All together about $650.00. What do you think, is this worth doing?

IMHO, AR's can be a very expensive thing to get into for a 12 year old. The ASA lower is a forged unit that I believe is made at the same place, with the same tools as Bushmaster. Don't quote me on that until I do a little further research, but I think I read that somewhere.
The final decision is yours. Sounds to me like the price is right for a well-shooting weapon. Both companies you've mentioned are reputable. Are you thinking of a complete FN upper or just the upper with a different barrel?

BTW.
I don't know if anyone has noticed but I've been away for a little while. Had an accident on one of the motorcycles and I've been laid-up for a few weeks. BUT.......I'm back.

The whole upper would be from FN. The only thing that will not come from them is the striped lower. The fire control parts are from Colt. And your right about a 12 year old and an AR, but with the way things are going, if I do not get one now, they may be outlawed by the time he is of age. Plus you know his old man will have to play with it a little too.

I picked up a Rock River AR15 at the 1500 gun show last week end and have yet to shoot it. From what I see it looks and feels very good. The are priced better than the others and hope they shoot just as good. The dealer gave me a $$$ back warranty if it doesn't shoot the way I want! WOW! You might want to lean that direction.

p.s. Sniper, keep them on 2 wheels! Harley's are expensive to tear up. Of course it was a Harley!?

Actually, no...it's not a Harley. The one I had the accident with is called a "Goliath". Custom-build, American-made. Both of us are in better shape now. Thank the good Lord for insurance. ANYWAY!!

Camera Man, I understand about "the old man will have to play", the father-son bonding is another good selling point in case the wife has some objection to the idea. I'd get the young man involved the whole way through it, shoot, get the wife involved and make it a family thing. Might I suggest DPMS parts instead of Colt in the lower? I like their triggers for a stock set-up. Just my $.02. No matter how you go, it sounds like fun for all involved and not a real wallet-smasher.

Oosk, The Harley Davidson I own is pushing 55 years old. It doesn't get out much. Thanks for your concern and happy shooting to all.

I second the choice of DPMS small parts. I used them to build up an Oly lower a few years back, and the results were much better than the stock Oly parts. And the parkerized dark gray on Oly's black-black lower actually looks pretty sweet.

Can you get (easily) Colt lower parts that are standard pin size? The commercial Colts have used odd-sized pins for over 10 years now. I'm not suggesting that they aren't available, but I'd be surprised if they are making them new.
