Recently bought a SS Mini 14 series 183 and know nothing about them other than they are a popular carbine. This one has a Ruger overmolded stock, approx. 16" barrel wth a threaded end, 4.5 lb. trigger with very slight creep, factory sights, a black flash suppessor that slides past the sight and not pinned, and a side swivel mount gas block. It ran well the first time out with some old 5.56 ammo (20 rnds.) and needs some sight adjustment plus the suppressor fell off. Appears to have light wear or use without stripping down. It appears from reading other posts there have been some mods done on this Mini. Also came with a Choate black plastic folding stock which I have not tried yet.
What have I bought?

Thanks bwraven, that is the info I was looking for. Felt the barrel had been shortened and threaded, but wasn't sure and of course the stock was changed twice. I just finish stripping down the mini and it definitely needed a good cleaning. Looking at the gas plug it has more use than the appearance, but it operates fine. Also looks like it may have had a trigger job.Your suggestion of a threaded suppessor sounds like a good idea, be a lot easier to remove and clean. Overall, the mini is in great condition for being around thirty years, I like it and feel it was a good buy. Now I need to find out how accurate it is.

It sounds like a Gundoc special, trigger work, cut down barrel and threaded muzzle. It should be a good shooter with bullets up to 60 gr. You should definately do something with that threaded barrel end before it gets messed up. Good find.

FWIW-a 183 with 1 in 10" twist will stabilize 63 gr sierras,69gr hpbt match sierras,and 70 gr speer semi pts!And BTW so will a 181!h34r:

You have bought one of the guns the tolerant anti's that get on tv every day and froth at the mouth about don't want you to have. if you want to be scared of something i think those folks fit the bill. those waco's are so worked up i think they may do just about anything to push this gun ban.
