Hello all,

I am hoping that a few of you can give me some guidance on these guns from Robinson Armaments. www.robarm.com

I really had interest in acquiring a Springfield Armory M1A, but I ran across the VEPR II and saw that I could get the .308 rifle and the .223 carbine (both with muzzle brakes) for the same price as one M1A.

Before you answer, let me tell you that I am not looking at entering any shooting competitions, or having the ability to shoot sub-MOA groups at 100 YDS. What I am looking for are rifles that can put steel on target reliably. And yes, I know that they are uglier than Rosie O'Donnell, but who needs "pretty" in a bug out rifle?

Any feedback about experience with these rifles is appreciated.

Hello,

I went through the same process in the last five years. I wanted and all around "self defense" rifle but couldn't afford the Springfield. I ended up with a Ruger mini-14. But, the Ruger's accuracy is, well, it ain't, and the .223 wasn't what I wanted either. I saved up my pennies, threw in an income tax return, and bought an Armalite AR-10A2. I love this rifle, but, it is heavy, expensive to shoot, and so are the 20 round magazines (about $80 a piece when you can find them). I still wanted something I could take out and let er rip. Sooooooooo, I bought a Ruger mini-30. I like it but it still wasn't what I was after. About 5 years went by (you didn't think I bought these all at once did you?) and I was able to get a brand new VEPR II for just under $500. What a rifle!!! The felt recoil compared to the mini-30 is nill, it fires flawlessly without jamming, it is balanced, more accurate than you might think, ammo is dirt cheap, and 30 round magazines are plentiful and cheap too. Ugly! No way, this is a studly looking rifle and I love it. I used to have a Norinco AK and this is heads and shoulders above it in every way. In addition, I am not mechanically inclined which is why I hate taking things apart. But, following the directions and pictures in the manual, this baby was easy to field strip and clean, I mean easy! I plan to buy another one in .308 and maybe even .223 some day. This is just my story so you might want to ask others if they have had such good luck with Robarms. I sure did.

mseansc. The Vepr rifles sure look nice. From everything I've read the 223 Vepr is a good shooting rifle with about the best accuracy you can get from a 223 AK design. The 223 Vepr has a heavy barrel compared to my SAR3 and Bulgarian 223. The Saigas seem to be the best deal going in 308. The latest price seems to be around $230.00 to the dealer. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Vepr rifles. Kreb's custom does a nice M14 mag conversion ($150.00) on the 308 Vepr if you feel you need more than 10 rounds of 308.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Does anyone know how the Saiga accuracy and performance compares to VEPR II?

VEPR's claim to fame seems to be the accuracy they can produce. With the .308 as my long range rifle, I'd want to make sure that I am not sacrificing too much accuracy.

Hi, If you want a good 7.62x51 buy youself a FN/FAL kit and receiver and build it yourself. You can have a most excellent Battle Rifle For about 400.00$ They break down like a single barrel shotgun and you just slide out your internal parts. The gas system is very good and reliable. Also get a handpicked kit and a Imbel receiver. If you don't want to buy the tools to put it together there are a lot of people who will do it for you for a hundred bucks. I love mine and would not sell it. Tapco has good used 20rd mags for 5.00$ a piece. They were the main battle rifle of over 80 countries. DON'T order one from century. I have about seven hundred in mine and you can't tell the difference from DSA's 1300.00$ rifle. It is almost as acurrate as a m1a1, and less than half the price. Check out the FAL FILES Anyway this is another avenue for you to explore..Good luck however you decide. **** Dawg:rapid: This my other 308. A Browning 1919a4

I would recommend Tapco. they have great service and parts, also you might want to check out a STG The Fals come in inch and metric. The inch receiverd gun is a l1a1 The metric is a G1. Mine is the metric model altho I have had both I just prefer the metric. It is made in Belgium. Are you familiar with the Fal Files web sight? Check them out. there is a wealth of information there. You won't be disappointed. They are very addicting tho. I have a friend that named his Fals "ennie, minnie, mynie and fred. his wife says he can't have no Moe. Be sure and check out that web site. There are alot of differnt links to check out. Am very curious, Let me know what you buy;) **** Dawg

**** Dawg,

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, it appears that TAPCO is out of the kits that you are refering to.

They do have some barrel assemblies and receiver assemblies, but having never built (or disassembled) a rifle before, I don't know what else would be required.

I'll keep looking.

Check out FAC ask for Harlan He can probably help you. You can also order the complete upper for 50.00$ and the lower for about the same. then get your Imbel receiver and voila a new Fal is ready to be born. i didn't know Tapco was out. Do a web search for them. They are worth the effort. You have to order 6 american parts also to be BATF compliant. Good luck **** Dawg
