Hi there!

I'm new to the shotgun forum, so I'd like to say hello to everybody in here and ask for some advice. A little while ago I purchased my first shotgun. At 32 years of age I might add... It's a Luger semi auto that I bought for some recreational trap shooting and got for 300 US Bucks. So far I've always bought my ammo at the range, whatever they had at the time. What are your guys's favorites? What should I be looking for in a good trap round? I've gone a total of 2 times so far, so I'm quite the expert on shotguns.... not!

As I recall, trap limits are one oz of shot (#8?) and the loads are limited as to velocity - either 1000fps or 1100fps I think. If you are serious about the sport you want loads that are consistent as to velocity. Also if you are serious and don't have unlimited funds you need to think about reloading. I used to use an inexpensive MEC and could load a couple of hundred rds per hour. Much cheaper than buying em.

I doubt that I'll get into trap shooting on a competitive level, I just don't have the time for that. But as you say, the cost of ammo is a factor in this. Especially if you were to seriously pursue this sport. With me going only every so often, with weeks and sometimes several months in between, it's not as big of a factor. I still don't like to waste money. I guess I am a cheap bastard. So I'll look into the reloading thing.

Thanks for the info!

TheGermanGuy - I own a Beretta AL-390 I don’t shoot trap competitively more like when I have time. I shoot either Remington, Federal, or Winchester shells and I try to get 12ga. 1 1/8 oz 2 3/4 length and either 7 1/2 or 8 shot. That seems to work best for me. Dvdstdg is right if you want to improve your score you need to try to keep your speed of shot the same so you get used to how far to lead the pigeon for that distance and speed. Good Luck

If you live in the US you might consider going to wal-mart and buying the Winchester field loads in 7/8 oz 8s. they cost $4.00 a box -$3.75 on sale and they shoot at around 1400 fps. they will work just fine at 16 to 20 yard range. futher back than that and you should go to the 1 to 1-1/8oz 7 1/2. That's what I shoot all the time. I can't hardly reload for $3.75 abox.

right now you can get some of the new federal shells for cheap. Sportsman warehouse had them for 39.00 - 10.00 rebate for the case (250 shells), but I just saw wal mart carying a sweet deal, 29.00 - 5.00 mail in rebate for the case. Thats like 2.40 per box.
