Hi Guys

The only bad thing that I have found, with the Ruger Mini 14 is that the mags are so thin, that they do not last for very long at all.

I get around 1000 rounds out of the mason mags, that are the best that you can get.

In a military scenario I would think twice.

The AK mags are so strong & last forever.

Other than that, the mini is great.

Hi cajungeo

there are only two things on these mags. The lips get weaker when the bolt cycles & the walls of the mag gets dinged.

You can fix the little dings but I do not know what to do with the lips.

Because they are so so hard to find & the cost of around $125 American each, having more fun right now with the AK.

Hay cajungeo
Have you dealt with http://www.globaltrades.com/whlsale.html before, just having problems with them. They are the only guys that have the mags that I need.

$125 american? where are you from (country)? I would be guessing you were buying factory 30 round mags for that price!! I have run literally thousands of rounds through the mags, and the only thing I am noticing is that the groups are getting looser-not an indication of mag problems.
I got rid of the crap USA mags I had, and the Ruger's so far are beautiful-and am awaiting a chance to try the 10 round Promags to see if they ar reliable.......the only mag failures I am aware of are-FTF, poor alignment/locking in place, FTF in certain rounds in sequence.......

Hi mikr

New Zealand is where I'm from.

The mags are hard to get, because of this reason the owner can name his price.

If the mags were cheap, then I would use them more. When I run out of this lot of mags, there will be know more, just can not offord to replace them.

I like my mini.

Hey gunrunner. Maby the reason you are haveing problems with globel is this from their web site: Firearm parts cannot be shipped outside of the United States due to licensing restrictions.
No I have not delt with them. Is the $125 for Ruger brand mags? or the John Mason you mentioned. Seems to me you should be able to get some 20 or 30 rd PMI's for way less. They cost about $29 to $39 over here. They are good mags. I don't see how your mags are getting dinged up so fast. Carry the mags in a protective pouch or bag to protect them. Maby try the Stainless Steel ones, as it is a harder metal.

Hi cajungeo

Your Answer about globle :Not sell outside America due to licensing restrictions.

/// Yes I would respect that but this is not not true, I have checked out the law. as other gun dealers say, there is not a problem with sending overseas, example:

Where do you think the mason mini 14 mags came from
http://www.gunaccessories.com/

Where do you think the AK mags came from
[email protected]/

I've seen the law example:

Its legal, but its also a hassle. A lot of dealers don't want to be bothered with it, apparently.

The ATF web site is rather cryptic and looking for actual information is a lot like panning for gold in your bath tub, but I did find this relating to exporting firearms:

*********
The GCA does not provide for an export license. However, firearms and ammunition shall be exported in accordance with provisions of the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 and a license must be obtained from the Office of Defense Trade Controls, PM/ DTC, SA-6, Room 228, U. S. Department of state, Washington, DC 20522-0602; (703) 875-6644. In the case of exporting NFA firearms, a permit, ATF Form 9, must be obtained from ATF.

The export of sporting shotguns is regulated by the U. S. Department of Commerce. For further information, contact them at their nearest district office or the Bureau of Export Administration, Export Counseling Division, U. S. Department of Commerce, 14 th St. & Pennsylvania Ave. N. W., Washington, DC 20230, (202) 482-4811. [22 U. S. C. 2778, 27 CFR 179.114-179.116]
*********

Isn't it interesting that sporting shotguns are regulated by a different department? Wonderfully inefficient, much like the fact that frozen cheese pizzas and frozen pepperoni pizzas are subject to different sets of rules from entirely different organizations (USDA for one, FDA for the other).

About the mason mags in NZ, buying mini 14 mags here, there are secondhand, cost max $250NZ around 125 American.

To buy a large mag overseas you need to request a permit, most people do not want to go through this, as at the end, if they say yes, max would be 4 mags, just not worth the trouble.

Since I follow the AR15.com forum, I asked the same question about AR15 magazines. Best info I could get indicates that USGI mags will last over 5,000 rounds, but they are usually damaged before they reach that number. Looks like mags just don't last forever.

I don't think I will be adding that link to my Favorites:p

Mini 14s have been stopped from an export permit from America, New Zealand has know problem with them, in any way.

Under "C" you can import most machine guns, AK 47 ect.

Hi doonnzl

Ruger is made in America?, then exported to other countrys.

The "C" rifles in our country NZ, will not be listed under the approved list, as it's a collectors item, not to be shot. The rifles are fully working condition.

Yes I agree with you about the prices of the AR 15s, cazy prices.....

Americans have cheaper guns, yes & when you think of the rate of pay, ( when working in America, it makes our NZ rate of pay shocking.

Ruger Mini-14 factory mags are VERY sturdy. In fact, they are superior to factory Colt AR15 mags. The steel is slightly thicker than AR mags. PMI's are good, but you can definitely tell the difference between a factory Ruger mag and a PMI. The lips on PMI's are not as sturdy as factory Rugers; the followers are different; and I believe if you take a caliper and measure the gauge of the steel in both, you will find that the factory Ruger mags are still slightly thicker than PMI's.
