FYI
Tested Aguila SSS against Lapus Scoremaster today. No real surprise. The SSS - was keyholing 30% of the time at 50 yards (got progressively worse at longer ranges), underpowered even for a subsonic round, were the only rounds that caused failures to feed, and gouped very badly.

The Scoremax performed great in every way at every range.

Bottom line: there is NO comparison between SSS and Scoremax - SSS was a big time failure and Scoremax performed flawlessly.

Thanks for the Test. I have had my eye on the scoremax 48 grn. It should hold energy longer, and less wind drift for the long shots. I'm ordering some, along with some other ammo. Will also try some wolf match.

Cajungeo, I’m trying to find some of the Wolf MT but everyone seems to be out of it. Let me know if you find some. RWS 50 and Fiocchi M320 also produced some very groups. Scoremax is probably my favorite for the long range plates so far.

Wolfe rimfire is German (good stuff) and the rest is Russian. If I can't find any by tomorrow it will seriously impact some testing in 1.5 weeks. The web page you listed is a good one that I use sometimes - the prices aren't the best but the availability is normally very good. Everyone I've talked to swears by the quality of Wolfe MT. Hope some of this stuff is still available.

The best ammo I have found for my 10/22 is Federal Gold Match. It burns cleanly and I haven't had one malfuntion in almost 1000 rounds. Good enough for me.:D

No I haven't. I'm like you, the price just doesn't seem worth it. I'm getting good groups now so if it ain't broke don't fix it......lol

Some of the recent range testing included Federal ammo such as UltraMatch, Gold Medal Match, 900A, and 900B. The 900B worked best for me. As a side note, the SGB mod on these Federal bullets had no effect on performance at short range (50 yards) and began showing signs of deterioration at around 125 yards.

This may not be exactly right but I clearly remember seeing some numbers on these rounds a few months ago to the effect that the 900b is subsonic (~1060-1080) and the 900a is supposed to be in the neighborhood of 1140-1160 at the muzzle. I did not put a chrono on these rounds, so it may my fault for not having the best data for this ammo. Also, I think these rounds are identical with the exception of velocity. Who feels like being a sluth to solve this mystery?

Speaking of subsonic. I've read that subsonic round nose rounds perform the best in .22 rimfires, because they don't have to go through the transition from sonic to subsonic, which is where most sonic rounds start to become unstable. The round nose keeps the subsonic rounds very stable compared to the hollow point rounds. Any thoughts on that?

P.S.: When should you become concerned about twist rate with the subsonics?

Thanks RWRP!

I was just thinking. If you have a 40 grain bullet that's travelling at 1100 fps and let's say a barrel with a twist rate of 1 in 16 inches. Then that bullet would spin faster and therefor be more stable than a 40 grain bullet that is travelling at only 900 fps at the same twist rate, right? Wouldn't you have to compensate with higher twist rates if you were shooting slower ammunition to achieve the same accuracy?

Just thinking...

I didn't know Aguila made barrels. I've heard of the Volquartsen muzzle weighted barrel though. Do you have any links for that Aguila barrel? And have you fired it yet? If so, what were the results?
