you know, i thought shooting a pumkin with softpoint bullets would be cool but it wasn't very exciting. hanging soda cans are fun because they flop around. shooting a gallon jug of water with a .270 or .30-06 is neat because it explodes into mist, but the .223 round isn't very exciting with that either. a friend of mine was getting rid of this beatup old Cadilac and i wanted to shoot it up first but then thought i better not because of ricochet. nice topic...

JW,
I was going to use some empty oil cans, just let the aroma get them coming to it!

Mummac,
I haven't tried the SP reloads on milk jugs yet. I did find some unused clay pigeons once, At 100 yds they do tend to fly apart well. If you hit it on one edge they leave a piece big enough for a second shot.
My range has some rocks in the backstop, about 6 to 8 inches. The mini tends to make smaller rocks of them. Course all this is done at a safe distance. Another thing I like to do is try to hit a can as many times as I can, letting it jump along the ground. Keeps the rapid-fire training going.
I'm all for "off the wall" targets, I hope all that do will consider doing it in the safest manner. Good Shooting in the New Year!:2guns:

Well, golf balls are a bit tough on these old eyes, especially through a peep sight. One thing I'd like to try is some of those "pepper popper" targets the IDP boys use. They'd be fun at a safe range and against another shooter. I wonder if there is a competition with mini-14/30 like that? Anybody?
I suppose if they're driving taxis they are off limit too. Dang! this is getting tougher as we go! I suppose to be fair I'd have to catch them packing explosives or something. Oh well, I'll just keep in shape hunting paper targets. Don't want to upset the PC crowd either.

go to a groccery store and ask them if they have some old watermelons that are "not so fresh" (ie begginig to show rot, old, the kind they would throw out anyway) and ask if you can take them off there hands. they will give them to you at a much reduced price or even for free! now take them and blast away.

this may not be enviromentally correct but I've been using wine bottles out to 400yds. I shoot in the desert and can fill them up with sand. When you really paste one, the dust flys everywhere like a little explosion. It's cool. Also, a cardboard wine case is a good target too. I tape homemade 11x8.5" paper targets to it. Photcopy a picture of your favorite ************, towel head, flying-carpet-commando and you have a recipie for hours of fun and enjoyment the whole family can get into. I've shot over 500 rounds at them boxes and they hold together pretty good. The nice thing about the cardboard box is there's not all the broken glass and you can just throw the thing in the trash when your done. The real fun is in the drinking though, which mind you, is not done while there's a-shootin' going on.

Folks,

Not all "Towel Heads" are terrorists!! Some that you see around the country are Sikhs from India, who, as far as I know, have nothing to do with Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorist organisations. So please be carefull about generalizations.

Incidentally, if you would like to see a semi-spectacular display while pinking, try hitting spray cans used for survey markings. These are the ones used by utilities and contractors to make markings on the roads or other locations. These are bio-degradable and are easily punctured by 223 rounds.

Best Regards,

Mikr brings up a good point. We lost an very good place to shoot in my area because some were literally trashing the place. If you take something to shoot up, at least take the darn thing home to dispose of it. If all of us would take one trash bag and then clean up after ourselves it would really help to keep those shooting areas from disappearing.

I even do this when camping take a large trash bag and pick up the the trash. Only thing I leave is a stone fire ring.

A good range master will tell shooters to police their brass, at the end of the session, sometimes us reloaders can pick up some good free brass to reload. ;)

I shot at an empty 1 lb propane bottle. It didn't even have a spew left. I was surprised when I hit it and it flew about 80 ft up. I also hid behind a tree to fire at an old tv picture tube. Had heard so many stories, about them tubes. All it did was leave a very neat .22 hole in the middle of the tube, no big bang.:(

My range is just a place in the National Forest, so we don't have rangemasters. But I have seen a lot of guys pick up after themselves, and get all over others that were beginning to drive away from their trash.
Out here we have a law against firing into live trees. If they later on log the trees, the bullet might cause the saws in the mill to jump and has cost some workers their lives. Same for nails and spikes. So be careful if you use a tree for a target support.
I remember when I was much younger, the town we lived in had a public dump. Dad and my uncles would go out plinking cans and the always present rats. Didn't have to take anything home, and the town fathers liked the idea of someone shooting the rats.

Paintballs (ones that are used in the paintball guns) at 100 yards.........hardest part is getting the dang things to stick to a vertical target. (We have to pick up all targets at our range-what ever it is that you shoot......great idea)
