natedog---When the Grunts ran us Sailors thru weapons training at Camp Pendelton In '66, they had what if I remember correctly was called a "Fast Reaction Range". We would walk along a berm & targets would pop up at different distances. We'd have to quickly shoot them as they'd go back down pretty quickly. We were taught to pay no attention to the sights & just look right straight down the barrel to line up our shots. It worked surprisingly well on combat style targets. This same sighting method was used at night as well. Hits were scored in a tower that controlled the targets.

At close range, say 10 yards, really since you have the stock to the sholder for indexing, I don't see all that much use for precision unless you are making head shots. Just look at shotgunners. That is not to say there is no indexing, as there most certinaly is, but at the speed needed, just get the stock up well and aim down the barrel. Oh, it will help if you practice it a bunch.

Oh we practiced a bunch believe me. The several times I went to Camp Pendelton was probably the most working fun I had in the service. Well we had a lot of lectures & field problems but there was plenty of shooting & I fell in love with the M-14 "Uncle" let me borrow. Memories of a mispent youth.

Until you use an electronic shooting timer, and learn what times the top men post, you dont even know what speed is. For instance, a typical cop needs nearly 2 seconds to react, make a concealed belt draw, and hit the 10" chest circle, at 10 ft. A truly fast man can do the same thing in under 1 second flat. I am talking about the average of 5 tries.

With a rifle, held down in Rhodesian Ready, a typical soldier is doing well to react, shoulder the rifle, and get a torso hit at 10 yds in 1.5 seconds. A truly fast man, however, can do the same thing in .80 second. Until you get a timer, you just THINK that you're fast.
