I'd not mind having a Mini-30 at all in addition to the Mini 14 I have now. For one thing, I have 1100 rounds of Norinco 7.62 for an SKS I sold two weeks ago. I've been advertising it in the local paper, but no one seems interested.

The Mini 30 comes in what models? I seem to recall it's not available in as many models as the Mini 14. I have the SS mini 14 Ranch with the syn stock. I've got 2 PMI 30 round magazines and have 3 Promag 10 round magazines on order.

The main reason I went with the Mini 14 is that my friend who runs a gun store said parts are probably easier to get for the 14, including magazines.

All current model Mini-30s are "Ranch" style.

You can get them in 3 combinations:
Blue with wood stock [Mini-30]
SST with wood stock [K-Mini-30]
SST with synthetic stock [K-Mini-30-P]

I have a K-Mini-30-P and a K-Mini-14.
I love 'em both!

You are right as I just discovered, all mini 30s are ranch rifles. This said I am not going to buy a mini 30 since I have avoided the ranch rifle like a diease since they came out with them. That folding rear sight is the pits. I really only like the original rear sight.

Nope, going to stick with my 14/5 and its garand type sight. Seriously thought I would rather add a scope mount to the /5 mini and keep the old style sight than have the mounts built in and have to deal with that folding rear sight.

Since you have both, please answer this:

Ammo costs in general? Which is less expensive or more available?

After market magazines? Which is easier to get?

Fun to shoot? Which? If ou had to give up one of them, which would it be! Ah, the STRESS just thinking about that, eh?

The .223 and the 7.62x39mm ammo are about the same price if you buy Wolf and shop around a little.

Availabilty of the .223 went down around X-mas, but I'm not having trouble finding either caliber at this time.

Reliable Mini-14 aftermarket mags are much easier to find than Reliable Mini-30 aftermarket mags. However, if you want to buy equally low-quality mags, both types are in large supply.

Both guns are fun to shoot. If I had a choice, whoever was trying to take one away would be dead. But in all reality, if I had to give one up, it would be the Mini-30.

This is because the Mini-14 is easier to hold on-target for uninterrupted, rapid firing. Also, I have reliable high-cap (30-rnd) mags for the Mini-14, and I only have reliable 5-shot Ruger Brand mags for the Mini-30. I would feel more comfortable in a combat situation with a Mini-14 than a Mini-30. (Of course there are other rifles I would rather have than either - just can't afford them.)

Thanks for the report on the two rifles. I found it interesting, and I'm sure potential buyers will also.

Sounds like I made the right choice with my Mini 14; but I'd sure like to get a 30 sometime. I've still got 1100 rounds of 7.62 I need to sell, trade or SHOOT! :ar15:
