Hmmm -
Done some research and some seem to think that they might blow up in your face if you shoot commcercial .308 ammo.
But the guys at G&A seem to be ok with them (read the aritcle associated with the link above) Seems like the importer has had them tested.

I own a 1916 in 308.Much debate over if they are safe with .308,"Any Mauser 1896 based action for that matter"Spainish used a caliber called 7.62X51 CEMTE,it had the same dim. as the NATO and .308 Win. round, but was loaded with a lighter bullet, and lower vel.,and pressure.I shot a couple of boxes of surplus NATO ammo in it and it was OK.After much thinking I went with a 7.62X39 Russian chamber insert, now its one of my most favorite, fun guns I have

Yes,I know the 7.62X39 Russian round uses .311,but most bullets really go .309 or .310 if you mike them. The Russian rounds pressure is a whole lot less than the .308 Commerical 55,000 psi +,7.62 NATO is a lot less than the .308 Win. also.Remeber the Ruger mini 30 using .308 barrels?None blew up,but accuracy sucked, and some USA loaded 7.62X39 uses .308 bullets anyway.I have shot over 3000 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo thru my 1916 Spainish Mauser without any negative effect.I feel a bolt action gun in sound shape will have no problem swaging a bullet down .002 without to much problem at the 7.62X39 pressure level. But shooting a steady diet of 308 Win. is much more dangerous out of a 1896 based Muaser,at the 308 Win pressure levels.Just my $.02.Inserts can be had at www.mcace.com for 30-06 or .308 to 7.63X39 Soviet chamber inserts.Aldo
