Hi everyone, first post, just a few questions to help me make my decision. First, I think I want to get the ranch because I like the fact that you can use both the sights and the scope. How easy is it to take A scope on and off? Second, what type of scope do you recomend? I'm looking to stay in the 60 to 100 dollar range for now until I decide if I like the scope or the sights. Also, is it possible to buy a scope that will mount over the sights so i could use both back and forth without having to remove the scope? Any suggestions? I appreciate your time and ideas.

welcome tomcat, good choice on the ranch rifle. Taking a scope on and off is as easy as loosening two screws and you can put it back on and still have a relatively close zero. As for what kind of scope you want, I guess it depends on what you will be using the gun for. For example, if you want fast target aquisition you may want to try a red dot scope, or a low power variable. If you will be using it for target shooting you want somethin with a little more magnification. For general use I think it is hard to beat a 3x9. Tasco, Simmons, Bushnell, and BSA all make good scopes and are relatively inexpensive. You can get see through scope mounts but for me it mounts the scope too high, however it might work out for you. Note: some types of red dot scopes require you to install a weaver mount to the already existing scope mounts. Have fun man.

Welcome to the foum tomcat. Just a word on cheap scopes, and the mini. The mini is known as a scope wreaker, because of its recoil. The cheaper ones will proably not last long, some may. My mini would buck the scope off its back after 10 shots till I installed a smaller gas port bushing, recoil buffer, and muzzle brake. Now recoil is only a little more than a 10/22. When you decide to step up to a better scope, Leupold, Burris, and Sightron, all make very good scopes in the 3-x-40mm for around $179. Just something to think about. Try a gun show or a large gun shop before buying.

I agree with Hanks on the over/under scope/sight set up. No consistant cheek weld. Ever see an AR shooter with a scope mounted on top of the suitcase handle? Their head moves all over which can change your POI. If your just into plinking, and having some fun, then it dosen't matter. If your a little more serious, where accuracy matters, then Lower is better for the scope mount.

Here is an interesting thread to help ya decide. http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/showthr...or+regular+mini

Thanks cajungeo, i would really just be using it at the range for fun. It will be my first rifle, as all i have now is a 9mm glock. I was also curious, what are the differences between the 14 and the 30, besides the ammo it uses. Does the thirty allow for the same easy removal of the scope as the ranch? Thanks for all your helpful suggestions, it will really help with my purchase next week, i'll be sure to let you alll know what route i take!:usa:

The mini-30 are Ranch. Same integral mount, and inclueded rings. It is more dificult to get hi-cap mags that work. the mini-30 shoots 7.62x39mm. (less hunting ammo to choose from, but the fmj Russian ammo is a little cheeper). The mini-14 shoots .223 Rem, and 5.62mm military (mil-spec). The mini-30 at around 100 yds or so will make a fair deer rifle. The mini-14 is a little light for deer, and not recommended (eventhough some have taken deer). Now do I want stainless or blue, composit stock, or wood? decisions, decisions!
