Due to the lack of small pistol primers, my son recently bought a large quantity of small pistol - magnum primers. I have recently used these for ball powders but not sure if i can use them for others powders like unique and bullseye. I haven't seen anything in the recipe books and have heard these primers increase pressure. Any advice?

Hi Km, magnum primers are OK to use if you are not at a maximum load. They will raise pressure some compared to non-magnum primers. If near the max load try a few and check for high pressure signs on your case.

They should do fine with Bullseye also, but follow Marlins advise above.

In what cartridge are you going to use them? I would use magnum primers in low pressure revolver rounds like 38 spl, but stay 5% below maximum loads. I would not use magnum primers in small high-pressure pistol rounds like 9mm or ,40 SW.

I recently picked up some magnum primers (just in case) & found the same answers.

I reduced max load by 10%, assembled 5 rnds. of 38 special, & went to range to see how they performed.

No noticeable difference.

****I did this with my Security Six & GP100 knowing they're built like tanks.****

Magnum primers add to the ignition of bulky loads at very low ambient temperatures. When using magnum primers in some low bulk powders it can negatively affect accuracy. The primer can push the bullet forward before their is a complete powder ignition.
