OK, I'm not really interested in doing this myself. I don't even know if it is legal under 922(r) or not. I have a memory of a conversion pack from the late 80's or early 90's that allowed you to use standard Ak mags in an SKS. It involved removing the mag lever and dropping in a steel mag well housing adapter.

Does anyone else remember this or am I loosing my marbles?

I am not talking about the "duck-bill" mags that we all detest so much.

Common sense tells me that such a product would be a highly marketed item that would be spoken of frequently on boards such as this one.

Please help. Am I loosing it? Did this ever exist?

Like I said, I'm really and truely not interested in doing this to my sks. I already have a registered Norinco SKS that takes the AK mags. This is just one of those "am I loosing my mind" moments kinda questions.

Even the removeable duck bill mags are illegal here in CA. Any SKS that is converted to accept detachable mags is BANNED. Instant felony time.

My father always said "why do you need an AR-15?". He trained on the M1 Garand back in the 50's, and like shooting mine.

Then one day I took him shooting with the AR-15. Not only did he love my little carbine, he compared it to my M1 Garand, and said "so this little thing is no longer legal to buy, but you can buy an M1 that shoots .30 caliber as fast as you can pull the trigger? That doesn't make any sense!".

I truely get to much attention when I go to shoot my SKS that takes AK mags. Thats why I bought a mini-30. I couldn't afford the new M14's they have out. Crazy prices. Maybe someday...

Norinco produced sks m's and d's made this way.
It is possible to do with a regular sks. Open up the receiver modify the bolt and add a mag release.

No but there is a booklet on ebay with how to instructions. there is also a website showing how. Check past threads at sks nboards this gets asked once a week there.

Josh, is that you? Anyway, there was a company who's name escapes me that did make a magwell filler and some other things to make a SKS shoot AK mags, but IIRC, they only used the parts to convert rifles for resale, and did not sell the parts as a "kit"

I won't get into the laws about modifying SKS rifles to take AK mags but it's not practical and you risk messing up your rifle if you don't do it right.

Here in Ohio it's still legal to own AKs and sometimes I see people selling their Chinese AKs which were factory made and designed to accept AK magazines but they sell at prices close to AKs.

If you have a regular SKS especially in Commiefornia then get a lot of stripper clips and load the ammo on them. You can reload just as fast and the SKS bolt has a stripper clip guide.

This was a discussion about a specific modification available several years ago (and it turns out still is available for a price) that I thought I recalled. As I stated above several times, I have no intention of performing this mod for any reason.

I remember those its but I saw a tutorial on changing the magazine well and rifle to take AK mags but if you make a mistake you'll butcher it and have an expensive paperweight. I don't know about the USC922r laws about changing to an AK magazine either but you'll need to replace enough parts with US compliance parts to make it legal.

Most hi capacity aftermarket magazines don't work that well either, I never tried any but have seen others at the range who weren't happy with them. I tried the Pro Mag magazine for the SKS but took it back since it needs tweaking to fit due to the different dimensions of the SKS rifles from different countries. This is the only Pro Mag product I wasn't happy with, their other magazines have worked flawlessly.

If you want an SKS which takes AK mags get a Chinese SKS made to take AK mags.

The SKS can be rapidly reloaded using stripper clips and the bolt carrier has a stripper clip guide to assist you.

The AK magazine does NOT fit the internal (fixed) magwell (yep, I tried just now!) - the mag well is too narrow. The frame rails would need to be reamed out too - weakening the receiver - NOT a good idea!

Gunrun, anything I have ever read about retro fitting a AK mag conversion kit to a SKS has been bad and not worked properly, a lot of folks have ended up changing them back to the standard 10 round fixed one, the only good mag conversion which has worked well that I'm awear of has been the Chinese 20 round SKS fixed mag which fits in place of the 10 round mag.

Over at calguns they talked about SkSs have their own off list thing going on. What they were saying is the russian were SKSs and the Yugo's and Romanian had different proper names so that CA SKS laws did not apply to them. As for the Chinese Sks type rifle they only talk about the ones that take AK mags being illegal. But i would not want to be the guy that tests this in court.
