A general comment on silicone for those who have never tried it. When it first became generally available through automotive parts houses and other I tried useing it on guns that were stored.
A collection I had was stored over 20 years without additional care and there was no deterioration whatsoever--as opposed to oil which is good for only so long and must be redone. Some damage ocurred in the velvet lined cased sets as the silicon seemed to degrade the velvet--read that rotted due to some chemical reaction. Not harmful to wood.

For defense weapons oil can be a problem due to dust gathering, dirt, etc. Silicone dries and will lubricate and not hold dirt. Additionally it is pretty temperature tolerant.

Sprayed on door gaskets car doors will not freeze shut, same for garage door gaskets/seals--won't freeze to concrete.

Disclaimer: I do not brush my teeth with it nor do I have any financial interest.

Situational awarness buys you time to prepare!!:D

I don't have as much respect for the silicone as I once had, as I had a girl friend, that had a silicone job done to her prowd marys, and they broke, and moved to other parts of her, and she was not so prowd after. I have used silicone on my boat, the sun will eat it up in about 6 months, and one molecule, the Captains varnish will fisheye bigtime! I like the Cosmoline, I know its nasty, but you can seal something up for 30 years, clean it, and it still looks new!

Cajungeo,
Take heart, Your girlfriend won't freeze to the garage floor anymore :D
Just one small thing though with silicones. Keep it away from any of your ammunition. It gets into primers and makes them inert.
Yeah, I hate it when them little fishy eyes show up in the paint. But the way I paint, ya can't tell!

If you have never tried a product called Cleansoil, pick up a $6.00 bottle and try it. It is a good general purpose cleaner, lubricant, preservative. The manufacturer told me that some of his biggest customers are race engine builders who use it on cams, cranks, etc that are stored for extended periods of time. It is also used by several SOG units and purchased out of unit funds because the services issue other products. he is competing for the USMC contract now.

Silicone is good, but i prefer G96 gun treatment. used it sence 85, on hundred's of gun's , never had one to rust. spray G96 on silicone cloth, wipe gun before storing, keep cloth in sealed plastic bag. one can of G96 and cloth will last for years.
