I want to get a scope or red dot for my mini-14, and I want to use the 1" rings that came with them. How do I know what size scope to get. I was looking at this one red dot but it was 30mm. Is that too small?

I'm using a Bushnell 40mm 4x-9x Trophy scope. Nice bright field. I had to use a dremel on the handguard lug to get it to mount ok. I think I paid around $75-$80 for the scope. I'm using the ruger supplied rings on the ranch rifle. I'm also using a recoil buffer and port reducer from Mike Knifong to keep the scope getting the xxx knocked out of it. I've shot maybe 500 rounds so far without problem. I did have to tighten the rings once. Maybe so removeable locktite is in order.

Cop369,

You can order 30mm Ruger RR rings from this place http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrP...ductSKU=721660B for about 50 bucks.

Thats what I did to mount my Bushnell Red Dot. I'm using the 1" rings that came with to mount a 4X16X40 BSA Mil Dot scope. I haven't had the chance to Zero either one, but when I do I'll swap 'em back and forth to see how well the ruger mounts return to zero. I'll report back an' let the gang know how it goes.

Regards,

Hey Cop369. You can use a 1" scope with an objective dia of 42mm. A largeer objective you will have to swap out the med rings for high rings. I mounted a 3-9x40 leupold scope using my ruger rings. I paid $179 for it new last year.

The 30mm is larger, and you will have to get the larger rings. If your rifle is new maby you can sweet talk the Ruger lady on the phone to swap rings?

Sounds like you haven't made up your mind on a scope or red dot. You should visit a large gun show, or gun shop. Figure out the primary purpose of your mini, then select suitable optics to match your primary purpose. Try before you buy, then shop for best price.

My personal position on my mini, I wasn't going to buy another set of rings or a base, and rings when the Ruger rings would work for my purpose. Just my 2 cents. ;)

COP369, My mini came with a pro point 5 red dot it has 11 light intesity settings and 4 diffrent dot configurations. I can see that red dots would have advantages in some situations and I like the one I have for plinking but for varmiting or shooting paper I use my 6X.
