The Kimber has a very "High" return for repair history. Our local gun store is large. They sell hundreds of handguns and hunting rifles each year. The Kimber has a 47% return rate for repairs. The buyers are often critical of the Kimber Warranty.
Higher priced guns equals higher expectations from the gun. I'd expect more from a Kimber than a Rock Island.

I bought a Remington R1 Commander a couple months ago. I also looked hard at the Ruger SR1911 Commander, Colt Commander and Remington 1911 R1 Carry Commander. All are fine pistols but only the R1 Commander came in a classic 1911A1 format much like my Colt Series '70 Government Model that I got in 1976.

I know most people prefer the long skeletonized trigger, skeletonized hammer and beavertail but I like a classic 1911A1 like my old Colt - short trigger, spur hammer and slightly extended Series '70 grip safety that doesn't bite me. Of course it also has the A1 arched mainspring housing but I prefer the older pre-1911A1 flat MSH. Only the classic R1 versions come that way (including the flat MSH) so I bought that. It also has the old style WWI double diamond wood grips that I love. The cheaper price was a factor too - $522 locally minus a $75 mail in rebate (which came last week). Anyway it's a great Commander, very tight, very accurate and reliable.

I love my full size Colt but have to say a steel frame Commander is a great 1911 to shoot a lot. Recoil is softer than the lightweight aluminum frame models but it weighs about half a pound more. Either way the Commander is a perfect size and the Ruger would be an excellent choice for most people.

you may just be disappointed with that line of thinking......

more expensive definitely doesn't always mean better

often it DOES......but not always

remember the '60s Jaguars?

a lot of people consider new Kimbers "junkers" compared to vintage models....as is the case with many firearms.

I've had a Ultra CDP II from Kimber for several years and it hasn't been a problem. But I haven't bought another Kimber as I've heard from too many unhappy owners. My Ruger Commander has been an excellent pistol.
wlhawk, I'm a bit perplexed. Which is of more value, the several years yours hasn't been a problem or the unhappy owners you have heard about?

If it wasn't for the external extractor on the S&W, I'd most assuredly would have purchased another Kimber. All I would ask of the New Ruger Owners is that they keep a detailed accounting of rounds spent between repairs, or just a plain Maintenance Log. That way there can be some definitive data on the quality of the Ruger Product. JMHO.

I've seen some praise for the ATI (think that's it, made in the Phils) that rates 'em highly.
I don't need another .45 though counting my 2 cap and ball BP revolvers I've got 4.
Ah, that's no excuse! I have a couple Piettas that fire a .451" ball, SAA .45 Long Colt and a Colt .45ACP. I thought I had enough, then Remington had a $75 mail-in rebate and Sportsman's Warehouse had a $75 off sale ... So now I have three more, an R1, R1S and R1 Commander! :2guns:

Thanks for the comments and education. I bought the Ruger 1911 cmd light weight. Got to the range this afternoon. Very nice shooter, about 100 rounds with no issues. Pretty nice break on the trigger. Verh pleased so far with my first 1911.
