Just put an RPK sight leaf on a WASR, and am pretty pleased with it overall.
Here's the poop:
1. RPK sight leaf is windage adjustable with markings on the bottom as well as the top.
2. The markings on the bottom seem to mystify a lot of people, but the reason is so you can easily adjust the rear sight from the prone position. That alone was worth the cost of admission.
3. Comparing the RPK sight leaf I have to the original WASR leaf, the markings on the top of the one I have line up as close to exactly as I can measure. Careful about Yugos or other oddball AK's, there could be compatibility issues, not sure.
So are there any faults to this?
1. You lose the "battlesight zero" setting, since the RPK elevation slider can't move quite as far back as the "P" marking on the AKM leaf. But I'm just going to use the 200m position as my battlesight zero position and call it a day.
2. Cost - These little buggers ain't cheap (around $60 bucks) and availability.
3. Finish - Mine was a "pull" so finish was pretty much "in the white" and I had to take some dings out of it with a jeweler's file first then reblue in oxpho-blue and use testors paint to fill in the markings.
4. Installation was a pain in the ****.
Haven't had a chance to get it to the range to confirm no shifts in zero yet; bad knee is acting up so I'm going to take it easy this weekend. Maybe next weekend if my work schedule permits.
Again, it may not be your cuppa tea, but I like it on mine and can hardly wait to get some range time with it. Think I'll bring along one of the 75 bangers just to really put any Fudds at the club into fibrillation.
Grumpy
PS I've probably put too much $$$ into this WASR - Russian AK74 wood, Roningrips pistol grip, CNC Warrior compact muzzle brake, Russian issue sling, slip on recoil pad (increases length of pull), and drop case. Also have a Russki made improved safety with a shelf to permit easy manipulation with the trigger finger and a Tapco retaining plate. Would like to get one of the "Venezuela" pattern Russki red dots, broke right now.
