LE6920 and SP6920 are both roll-marked "M4 CARBINE" - SP's are made by "Colt Mfg" and LE's are made by "Colt Defense" .

"M4A1" is the SOCOM model from "Colt Defense".

Colt Defense is discontinuing the use of the LE “Restricted to Military and Law Enforcement” roll mark. As soon as existing production runs are complete, models previously roll marked as LE6920 and LE6940 will be roll marked as SP6920 and SP6940. This change applies immediately to all new orders. In addition, existing orders will be filled with rifles marked with the new model numbers as soon as the LE roll marked inventory has been manufactured and shipped.

Accordingly, proceeding from this date forward (8/2011), all orders for LE6920’s and LE6940’s will be entered as SP6920’s and SP6940’s respectively.

The roll mark for the SP6920’s and SP6940’s will appear as follows:

SPORTER

M4 CARBINE

SER. SPXXXXX

I am not a Colt AR wizard, just been doing some reading about the markings on 6920's. Colt seems to be undecided on how they want them marked, and they have gone through a number of variations.

Do some reading on this and other forums, some people are looking to collect one of each version. It seems that Colt has also changed the color and wording of factory box label just about as much.

6920 vs. 6920, they should all be mil-spec inside, and really they only vary in the markings and accessories.
