I have removed the Gas Block from my 182 series Mini-14, due to cracks which have formed in the metal.
In the Ruger handbook it says "Factory Fit item" and when I called Ruger they won't even sell me one, saying the rifle has to be returned to the factory for fitting.

What is so critical about refitting this part?
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to ensure it's correct alignment when I replace it?

Thanks!

This is really not to much of a big deal. However, the problem seems to be the terrible dimension of the small tube insert. When I took mine off it was poorly machined and way too small. So when the gass block was replaced, it could go on crooked or too far back or forward. Since I own a machine shop I made one from stainless steel and made a perfect fit between the barrel and gas block. It can't help but go on correctly. Also I found that the bushing itself needed to have two distinct diameters because the hole in the barrel and the hole in the gas block are quite different. Good luck
