I've been looking for a well-made low-cost red dot scope for my mini-14. The only ones I found that were ~$100 came from BSA optics and Tasco. Due to Tasco folding in the market im not sure if I should still purchase a Tasco. Have any of you had any experience w/ BSA scopes? Please help me pick the right brand. thanks

I have an UltraDot with a 4 mil dot and 11 illumination settings. It comes with a sunshade and filters. Paid around 120 + tax for it from a local dealer. Have seen them cheaper in catalogs.

I have found the UltraDot to be reliable so far. The dot tends to elongate as you increase the illumination. Not worth a damn for hunting small varmints such as groundhogs but would work OK in defensive situations. Target acquisition is not a quick as you might think. Would do OK on coyotes out to 150 or so then the dot size would make your shot placement questionable. Comes in 1" and 30mm tubes.

I just mounted a Bushnel Trophy red dot on my Mini and I like it very well. It also has 11 intensity settings and 4 recitial settings. First one I have ever owned. Mounted it and put it in the gun safe but forgot to turn it off. Not used to having to turn a gun off yet, but that seems to be where the future it taking us.

At the risk of stating the obvious, if you don't have any ambient light a red dot won't give you any advantage in picking up your target as all you will see is a red dot.:D

I have a BSA and I wont use it. The dot is too big and fuzzy and It just plain sinks. I went out a bought a Simmons under 100 bucks, the dot is clearer and I like it a whole lot better that the crappy BSA. Both were used on a Scout rail

I have several of the bsa red dot and they are great for shot guns and cross bows. I put one on my mini and the size of the dot at 100 yards prevented me from doing a bullseye- ectome. I think it would be great for hunting. Ive taken 8 turkey and 5 deer in the last few years all with bsa.

good luck

You must consider the dot MOA size when looking at red dots. I prefer 4MOA or less, with 1-2 MOA being my fave. Also if you are considering a BSA,try to get one that is turned on and off by turning a knob. The others turn on and off by push-button. The problem is that the button is located in a spot that makes it TOO easy to turn on accidently, such as when in a case,or just laying on it's side. I personally would go for the ProPoint.
