I dont have a M14 or M1A unfortunately but was curious how does the windage adjust? I thought about making a rear sight for my mini 14 and couldn't quite figure out how the M14 sight worked. It seems to be a pretty proven design and has windage and elevation on the sides which I like. I see how the elevation works and thats simple but unless i redesign the "ramp" to something else that wont be practical for me to make.

While looking I tried to find a animation of the internals with no luck. All I can really find is how to adjust it from the outside but I want to know how it works on the inside.

Thanks for any help.

This is a kind of simplistic answer but here goes...

The windage knob is threaded into the base, when you turn it, it moves the whole base in its dovetail to effect windage changes. The M14 windage adjustment is actually very close to what is on a Mini-14 (assuming you have one of the older non-Ranch style rifles), but you need to use a tool or bullet point to adjust the windage on the Ruger.
