Rapala size five

Rapala's are some of my favorite lures. Another thing that works for Big trout in some places is soft plastics that mimic crayfish, I have caught big brown trout in the Truckee river with said soft plastics and with Rapala's. Only thing I hate using Rapala's is the price and I loose a few every trip!

I use live baits the size of a respectable stream run rainbow trout

but seriously in my neck of the woods the Opelu (mackerel scad) we sabiki for and use as live bait are about 13" long and weigh at least a pound.

I agree on Rapalas tho - the largest sized Rapala magnum on a wire leader towed behind my Kayak under sail is good Wahoo and Tuna medicine.

they get destroyed after 2-3 good wahoo strikes though.

you know Rebel made a pretty good small shallow running crawdad crank bait back in the day - allot cheaper than a rapala. maybe they still make em?

I'm set up with all the salt water gear, too. I've caught a lot of albacore, yellowfin and yellowtail on Rapalas and feathers. The problem is after buying the live bait and paying for half the boat fuel, I could do a week trip to the Sierras for the same money. I count myself lucky that my buddy sold his boat recently!

That's why I run a kayak, runs on redbull, wheat thins, powerbars and beef jerky :lol:

I can't afford a powerboat, let alone the fuel for one.

I use damashi/sabiki rigs to make my own bait (on light tackle they provide quite a bit of amusement... unless something big comes by and crashes em' before I can get the bait in the boat)

from what i hear the so cal boys do pretty good on yellow tail and rock fish in the kayaks.

I do miss fishing fresh water though - Smallmouth in Lake Tulloch, Largemouth bass at berryessa.

maui has no freshwater fishery to speak of -Oahu has largemouth, cats, and Peacock bass (one of these days I wanna shot at one of those) in a few small lakes - but maui got nuthin'
