I'm going to bed the Hogue stock.

I am ordering Accraglass Gel based on discussion here.

Should I also order atomised steel to mix with the epoxy?

Whould I need to drill holes in the Hogue stock or will epoxy stick to it?

Thanks.

voruzon, I just used the Accuglass gell kit (green box). I first cleaned any oil or dirt from the areas to be bedded, then abradded with a dremmel. I applied tape on top of the stock (under the receiver) to cover the rubber, this area is not bedded as it has a rubber coating. The tape will catch the squeeze out. If you get any epoxy on the stock, clean with isopropal alcohol. Good luck, and don't forget the release agent! ;)

The identation in the recoil lugs where the trigger group latches - those must be filled with the modelling clay, right? Otherwise they seem like a locking area.

But then I wouldn't be abble to lock the trigger group while those are bedded. How do I ensure proper fit and tight pressure without the trigger group locked?

Do I bed first around the mag well with the trigger group and then around the recoil lugs without the trigger group?

I followed and would recommend the procedure outlined in the .30 Service Rifle Shop Manual by Jerry Kunhausen. The way to deal with bedding the action without the trigger guard is to construct a simple device to hold the action in place firmly while the epoxy cures. I used a carriage bolt, two pieces of 1/4" steel plate cut 1" X 3" or so (a couple stout pieces of whatever is handy), and a locknut. The top piece of steel sits on top of right lug raceway and butts into the left. A whole is then marked and drilled in the appropriate position to center the carriage bolt through the action. The bottom piece of steel gets drilled on its center and slides onto the bolt below the stock and the whole affair is tightened up with the addition of the nut. I padded my bottom piece with a wider piece of wood to keep it from diggin into my stock. Worked like a charm.

voruzun, you can secure the receiver down on the stock with 3 heavy duty rubber bands, and insert the trigger group, but not latch down as Mike suguested in the bedding video.

I bedded mine in one shot. You are only bedding the area in the stock common to the receiver.

cajungeo, could you be more specific on the "roughening" the Hogue stock requered? You mentioned using Dremel. Which bits/attachments did you use for that?

Thanks,

might be a dumb question, but i do bodywork, and play with fiberglass from time to time. is automobile type fiberglass cloth and resin suitable for bedding my stock? release compound is available for molds and stuff to. just wondered. i think the gel would work pretty well, as it doesnt run.

Just rough it up (break the glaze), if you don't have a dremel, use course sand paper. The clean rough surface yields a suitable surface for the glass compound to bond to.

wahturi, The accuglass dosen't shrink or expand the way fender putty would. The accuglass gel cures very hard in 3 or 4 days. Working on a fender ya can't wait that long, so it is a quicker drying formula. The Accuglass Gel has the proper mixture of fine glass, which is very hard, it is not just epoxy.

But I do have the Dremel, so I am curious which attachments/bits you've used.

I used a rotery ball file, lite pressure. I didn't remove much material, just a rough appearance, with a groove here, and a little hole there.
