Heres a picture of the Winchester 223 rem shell. Has anyone ever seen one like this with the Y stamped on it ? It also has a notch above the Y. I contacted Winchester about it. They gave me a phone # to the Buffalo Bill Historical Society. They did'nt know what it meant niether.

Thanks

Looks to me like the case had an irregularity and flowed in the die during the sizing/loading processs. I'v done it with a hand press though
not to that extent. No big deal, quality control just missed it. Wasn't pretty but it went Bang.;) :ar15:

The picture does'nt do it justice. I have a better one but was not able to get it to load up. That Y is actually stamped on the shell.

Hey earthmover. I found several sites on HeadStamp ID. The manufactures stamp the head, not the neck. Stamping the neck would weaken it. Can't imagine who would stamp it on the neck. Could the flying brass hit something to indent it in that shape?

How about a bullet with a bad burr on it was seated in the neck notching and wrinkling the brass, then apon firing the brass was pressed to the chamber wall enough to make it look as if a Y was stamped into it.

Just a guess..

I only noticed it as I was picking up all the empty shells out of the yard. No I would not have shot it if I had noticed it first. Thanks for all the replys.
