Some time ago I purchased a used 188 series Mini 14 stainless Ranch rifle. (I will call Ruger to determine if it is pre or post-ban.) Probably paid too much, but it came with some 20/30 round mags, a black, plastic case catcher, and a nice (but oversized soft case). Scope rings were missing.

Supposedly it had way less than 500 rounds fired in it. But it came to me uncleaned. I field stripped and cleaned it. Took it to the range and fam-fired it, then put it away. Now it has set through a summer and a winter and I want to get it back out on the range.

Just discoverd this group. So here are the questions:

Apart from the pre/post-ban issues, what can I do to it? I would like to put a M-14 style front end (no bayonette stud) on it. Saw one (from a link here) at gunaccessories.com - "Mini 14 Flash Hider with no lug" -- does the terminology "Flash Hider" put this in the "illegal" post-ban category?

Also does anyone know if this includes a front site? The Ranch rifle has a ramped post up front & I want something similar to the M-14 site. (Cut my teen in Boot Camp on the M-14)

Thanks, and I'll close before I get longwinded.

your allowed 2 evil features on a post ban. You already have 1 with a detachable magazine. You can have the flashhider with no Bayo. lug and keep it in a non pistol grip stock. Someone used to offer a nice looking M14 STYLE sight/flashhider, I can't remember who it was now. The one I'm thinking of had a sight on it, looked just like the M14 settup.

http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/SE-H-RI-Mini14Ranch.html for some help in serial #'s.
The flash suppressor I have seen with the M14 style post was from here-http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/10-22/7-07-12.asp

Unless you're in Kali I would think you were ok in that--if any LEO asks that is a muzzlebrake on there, not no flashhider :D

Well, the mini is still legal even in Kali, so I would think you could do almost whatever you would want, within NFA reason.

The only thing I can think of is to wish you sincere luck with mags, ones that work, that is. ;)

i have the same flashider (with the bayonet lug, though). The sights on it are much better than the factory ramp, but are not quite as nice as the M-14 sights. The front post is not as precise as the M-14 sight (but then neither is the gun), but it does have the wings on each side. The flashhider works pretty well at eliminating flash at night, and there is no vent slot on the bottom so the blast won't kick up dirt. The only thing I don't like about it are the looks. The muzzle end section has a larger outer diameter so the bayonet will fit snugly, and it looks kind of klunky. Choate used to sell a flashhider that looked exactlylike the M-14 one, but it has been discontinued (however, you should be able to buy it at http://www.uws.com/choate-stocks.html , down at the bottom of the page order no. 07-07-14). Choate does still sell a shorter version like the one mikr mentioned.

I just got off the phone with the folks at Ruger. My 188 series was manufactured in March of 1994 (Quote: "Is is a pre-ban rifle.") with 1 in 7 rifleing.

Now I need to look back through the earlier posts to see what is all means. For one thins, I think the "1 in 7" means I can use the heavier ammo. And my "options" would seem to be a little more open for "accessorising" it.

Thanks all, for the initial responses.

By the way, I am from Missouri -- long way from by actual birth state -- Kalifornia. Am I'm glad of that!

I did see a while back that gunaccessories.com did have an AK style "muzzlebreak" (out here on the left coast the words flash and hide are not spoken back to back) with a front sight on it. You'll have to whack off the Ruger front site with a piece of wood and a hammer - it's a real pain in the ass. That might help. Also, while you're swinging the stick, you may as well upgrade the peep-site too. search "deltaforce.com" for a part number of a mil-style peep that is kick-ass.

have fun with it. it's a great excuse to buy stuff.
