hi all, first i would like to say great forums,i have read through some of it with great intrest.i have a lot of questions for the board about my mini14.what i got is a standerd mini 14,s.n prefex starting in186.well as you can guess im not happy with the accuracy from the gun.so i was going to try.some of the things iv read on the board.i.v allready done one mod. to the gun by installing a muzzle break on the gun.(its the one from cheeper than dirt,).but iv not had a chance to fire the gun to see if there is any improvements .
i was reading some of the forums about also glassbedding the stock, and i was thinking about giveing it a try, seeing iv never done this before i was wondering if anybody knew where i could find that video for glassbedding that was talked about on the other forums.i would like to watch it before acually doing the job,so i kind of get the idea what im dooing.if anybody had one for sale let me know
lastly for today anyway,i have a scope mounted on my mini,by the b-square side mount, what do you all think of this mount, will it lose it,s zero ,would i be better off with a differnt mount,iv seen one that installs in the rear sight mount is this better?if so where can i find one at?i dont want to drill and tap gun for a scope mount.(im using a bushnell 3x9x40 scopecheaf on the gun).
i guess that is it for today i have some other questions on other aspects of the gun such as trigger group ect.but i will take it one step at a time so i dont get to far ahead of myself.i guess my next step is getting it glassbedded so i will start there
tnks guys have a great day :usa: :usa: :usa:

Thats the guy to contact. From what I'v heard he does great trigger jobs and his gas bushings are worth purchasing especially if you have a ranch model. I'm probably going to send him my trigger group and get the bushings and the bedding video.

I use an S/K mount from Brownell"s, the one that replaces the rear sight, with a Bushnell 3-9x40 and low Weaver rings. Wonderful set up! The scope sits low, the brass ejects fine, and the zero is repeatable. I am a gunsmith so I get a discount, not sure what it would cost retail.

Brownells catalog 55, page 286, item number 794-001-014 is the S&K scope mount for minis serial number series 181 and above. Gunsmith cost is $42.70 and retail is $61.00 each having a flat rate shipping of $7.25 anywhere in the USA. You could save a few bucks by ordering it through me, but if you have an FFL dealer where you are the savings would be better because I would charge for shipping to me and to you. You can order it from Brownells at 1-800-741-0015 or at www.brownells.com and enter the item number. The rear sight won't come out easy, and you will ruin the retaining pin on the windage adjustment. Make sure you don't want to use the iron sights before you do this. Then the new mount sits in the original sight's place and is held by two allen screws in the sides and a torsion allen screw at the rear. Once tightened down it is rock solid. It will accept Weaver Style rings. Personally I use the Weaver brand instead of high dollar rings like Millet because I have never had any problem with them. The ones I use are item number 955-490-003, a low 1" ring in a matte finish. They run $23.55 for you, $16.23 for a gunsmith. Put 'em on the same order and the shipping is still the same. I will get you the parts at 10 percent over my cost plus shipping to and from if you want. It will take a few days to me, a few to you. I am in the middle of setting up shop at my new address, so later on I will offer trigger work and bedding and all the things folks want for their minis. PM me if you're interested!

Welcome to the forum wheels. If you were using a sand bag, and saved your targets, shoot with the same ammo to see how much the brake has improved accuracy. Mine went from 4 1/2" groups at 100 yds to 2 1/4" with the same brake.

The simplest thing often over looked is the diet of ammo your mini likes. Each one is different. Get a box or 2 of several different brands, and bullet weights, see which shoot best. Im not talking about expensive match ammo either. Just use med to low cost ammo, as you have a semi auto, and will go thru a lot of ammo compared to a bolt gun, besides shooting the mini is kinda adictive. I prefer the boxer primed ammo to the Russian berdian primmed ammo. My mini likes the Winchester 45 grn Varmint. About $9-$12 for a double box of 40. Shoots 1 1/2" avg with brake, stock bedded, trigger job. No flyers, just nice little round groups.

I got the bedding video from Mike Knifong. It isn't a Hollywood production but Mike does a good job keeping the camera right in there as he beds a mini, and shows how to bed different kinds of stocks, as well as change out the gas port bushing. I used the brownells Acraglass Gel Kit. (green box) it isn't as runny as the regular.

Ammo selection, scope, muzzle brake, stock bedding, trigger job = 2" groups or less with no flyers at 100 yds, if you are a decent shooter. ;)

iv shot like 3 or 4 boxes of the umc remighton yellow box 55 grain steel case bullets and thay shot bad.im not sure what group was,but it was 50 yards.but that was before the muzzle break,i have not shot it with the muzzle break on the gun yet, just for the hell of it i got a box of hornady 75 grain moly coted boat tail hollow point match rounds but have not tryed them eather, today when i was at mijers i seen the 45 grain winchester varmit loads in the 40 round box i should of brought some.i got plans to bed the stock but i need the video as a guide so i can see im doing it right.sort of a visual instruction.iv had this rifle for around 5 years,(brought it from gun show).and only have shot like maybe 50 rounds through it so far.i thought about selling it and getting a bolt action gun,but i like the gun and am on a mission to get it to shoot,i would love 1.1/2 or 2 inch groups at 100 yards.the main reasion for the gun is to hunt some coyoties, and such,im not looking for match target gun accuracy.just good hunting accuracy for coyoties and woodchucks.i also know that a trigger job is in the future but first i want to try the muzzle break and bed the stock and see where im at.one more thing the gun is destroying my brass when it ejects from the gun what could be causing this?

The Ranch models eject brass out the side, and with a lot more force than the std mini. The slide rod handle is hitting your brass, look at it and you will see the brass stains.

I got a gas port busing kit from Mike Knifong, and it reduced the ejection from 45 ft to about 10 ft. I keep my brass to reload. A 40 rd box of winchester brass is worth about $2 in brass. I got the gas bushings, and trigger job from mike at a nice discount for the combo. Use the search button , and enter "bushing", many posts will come up on that subject.

Hey Wheels,
My standard mini does the same thing, even with the smaller gas bushing and extra power recoil spring. I can see the brass marks where they bounce off my rear sight assembly and the area of the receiver just in front of it. Not all of the brass hits this way however.
Just my 2 cents,
Bob

Mine is a standard mini and I find that most of the brass is deformed at the neck, with the round leaving scrape marks on the bottom of the scope cap. Not much, mind you, but I have a low scope mount. It clears the mount fine, but just knicks the scope cap. It's a 182 series bought well used for popping the occasional coyote out here in Montana. I don't reload, so it's not an issue to me. I would like to high speed video it during firing and ejection to get a clear picture of what's going on in that blink of an eye. Anyone done this?

After all this time I thought Ranch models only had this problem. The gas bushings fixed it on the ranch.

Hmmmm, I wonder if a deflector of some sort could be made. Not obtrusive, but functional. I have heard of some putting foam on the underside of the scope mount. Course at the range you could use a brass catcher.

I have actually seen a brass deflector in a catalog once. It was a stamped steel affair that angled out over the ejection port. The S&K mount I have has a moderate deflection angle built into it and I can find no traces of brass on it. It ejects fine otherwise, I just end up with some dinged brass. Did you use the larger or smaller gas port on your mini to fix this problem, and what does the kit cost?

I have seen it on the web, not in person. Seems a sound concept, but it would preclude a quick field strip if I wanted to. A synthetic stock usually is better, but I still like the look and feel and of wood. My synthetic is just cold plastic!

Hey gundoc. Mike Knifong had the 3 gas bushing kit for $25. But for $25 more he would do a trigger job, combo priced free shipping. That's the route I took. ASI now has the bushing kit for $10.95.

With my mini being new, I used the larger bushing wich is way smaller than the Ruger one.

Wheels, I was a little leary to bed my mini also (my first) till I watched the video. It is about 2 hrs in length, as Mike shows you how to bed any stock, also change out the gas port bushing. After watching the video I felt very confident I could do it. Important thing Mike points out, is to rehearse it, so you will have every thing at hand that you need. Prep time was about 30 min. actual bedding time was about 10 or 15 min. Wait about 3 days for the bedding to cure to max strength before you shoot it. Its a piece of cake. You will like how your mini shoots afterward. :D

Thanx Cajun! I spoke with Mrs. Knifong for a bit today and I am getting Mike's info package. I do trigger jobs and barrel chopping, and general smithing around here, but I had not seen his gas port bushings. I think it will be interesting. I moved not long ago and my shop has taken a back seat to the house, but when I get set up again, I'm thinking of offering mini work to the board members at a discount. I have really enjoyed Perfect Union and will put a link on my smithing website to it when I have that up and running soon. I am looking forward to being of service to Perfect Union members!

Thanks!
