I heard that a new M1 Garand is being built by Springfield Armory and that orders are being taken. I saw that an FFL Dealer was taking orders, and I'm very interested. Can anyone confirm this for me?

This is true: however, the first 400 will be distributed with Breda receivers utilizing all SA parts, until SA can begin production on their own receivers. The Breda receivers are supposedly forged (like the originals) while the SA receivers will most likely be cast.

Forged!

The only forged receivers to date are military receivers (USGI and the Italian ones made from USGI machine tools and drawings).

All the Cast ones are repros of the original, and vary in their quality. All of the original are top notch (unless they were damaged by rust or war).

http://www.fulton-armory.com/CAI-TI.htm for an example of a "modern" Garand receiver.

The original USGI receivers are available as receivers or whole rifles from the CMP. Why mess with cheesy copies?

For those who have had good luck with their aftermarket clones, shoot'm and have fun with them, and thank your lucky stars that you got one of the good ones.

I have one of the new Springfield M1's. My receiver is made by Breda. The receiver is forged and looks brand new. The rest of the rifle has SA parts and a new SA barrel. The rifle is beautiful. A co-worker of mine also bought one. We paid $799 here in Boise Idaho.:usa:

Shooting times has a short two page article this month. It doesn't get into much more than talking about sights and loading. They do show a picture of the action area and some of the wood. At least it's something to look at.

They list the price at over $1000. As Bill mentioned I would also go with the CMP. As a matter of fact I ordered a Winchester with a VAR barrel just two weeks ago. :D :p
