Im about to buy a mini 14 tactical, catalog number 5847....not the ATI stock. I like the more traditional look. One of the uses for this gun will be hog hunting where I live in Texas. As you know hog hunting is often done at nice. Those with out a light attached to their gun need not apply. Not having one is a good way to get hurt. I love the mini 14...I just can't see how to attach a flashlight to it. I've seen some guys drill into the stock and put picatinny rails on the stock. I like that but seem like a something I'll just totally screw up and regret. Im trying to keep the gun as light as possible with basic optics and a light, thats it. How do I do this and not make it look *******? I've seen some rails that attach to the barrel, no idea if those work with the tapered barrel. I've been doing a lot of looking and Im at my wits end on what to do. Just throw some ideas at me.....please. Thanks!

they fit my tapered. but i did in end slide it a bit forward like inch or so.

I got one of these to hold the light. It's very well made and light weight. It quickly adjusts to whatever angle you like. Works great!

Not sure how your scope is set up, but I use one of these:

i have never been happy coyote hunting at night with a tac light, the batterys don't last very long and they are expensive. We have since moved on to dedicated varnmit lights.

Wow I've never even seen those before. I'm wondering, are hogs hunted the same as coyotes, will the lights be used in the same way?

I've wanted one of those for quite awhile. If only it was legal to hunt anything other than hogs in OK with lights...
Does that fit on the tapered barrel version on the mini 14? I do like that. And I e-mailed the company last night. Have not heard back as of yet, but since it was only last night they probably haven't gotten my question yet.How about This from the Arms Room? I know it's no scope-mounted spotlight, but seems like it would keep the rifle light and handy, while still keeping you from getting torn up...

I'm not positive about whether it'll fit a tapered barrel. But Lee Hadaway (The Arms Room) is the manufacturer -- I'm sure when you hear back from him he'll say that it can be done.
I heard back from Lee. He says it an extra $10 for my gun because he has to open it up. So there you go. Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to make a decision soon as to what I want to go with.
He may have one that fits, but the regular model doesn't, when I get time I'm gonna measure and see if I can open one up. My fault, ordered two of the regular model without thinking. The gun it's made for looks great with it on.
Where I used to live and hunt hogs night hunting of them was not legal, so without saying anything to incriminate myself I will say that spotlighting hogs at night with a powerful light will not spook them but noise or if they scent you will. Just a snapping twig under foot will send them scampering.
