I went to Walmart to buy a 10-22 and saw this wood stock Mini 14 on clearance for $599. Seems Wally World wants out of the carbine business....their loss...my gain! I got it for home defense, plinking and some target shooting and put this together to fit my needs. I didn't care about the iron sights, eyes not that great, and I wanted a red dot hooked up with a 3x magnifier that flips to the side. Scoured the internet for a picatinny rail that would work with the Ruger receiver hole pattern but couldn't find anything. Some nice ones but all would have been about 1/4 inch higher than my Holosun red dot on the Amega Mini Scout. I really didn't want a rail covering the area above the ejection port so I modified the picatinny rail that came with the rifle and it worked out perfect. Had to get the Vortex VMX-3T magnifier as far back on the receiver as possible to be able to get the 2.2" eye relief I needed. I ran about a 100 rounds through it before I did any mods and can't wait to get back to the range with the new set up.
