I just fire lapped the barrel with mikes precoated bullets. I really couldn't tell a difference in feel or change in accuracy. I got a 3" group at 50 yards almost a verticle string. Then shot another group and got a 2" group with a perfect round patern. These were with the surplus SA ball i was using earlier. Both were 5 shot groups.
This weekend I tried shooting at 100 yards. I used a cheap load of 26.0 grains of surplus WCC 844 and some russian 55grn HP. Hardly a match load but it functions in all my semi autos and cost me about 8 cents a round to load. The cheap russian bullets were not as uniform as american bullets. There are opened based HP. Anyways I shot 5 rounds at 100 yards off a bench without scope or sandbags and got a 3" group. Perfectly round. I was astounded. It may not sound that great but if you seen the way this rifle shot before and after, the difference was night and day. It hardly ever grouped before. Even when I was lucky enoguh to get a small group, the shots looked like they hit randomly on paper. And often wild shots were all over the target. I also had my Armalite AR15 with me and shot it with the same load under the exact same condition. I got one 5 shot group of 1.25" and another 5 shot group of 2" with 4 rounds in 1". Im still very happy with the mini 14. For those out there that are having accuracy problems with your mini, try glass bedding. I get solid repeatable accuracy without flyers and little dispersion when the barrel gets hot. It was the single greatest improvement to my mini 14's accuracy.
