Here's the deal - went out shooting today, and had LOTS of problems with stove piping!

I tried a variety of ammo, and it seems that CCI Velocitor will not have as many problems as lower velocity ammo.

I tried some Eley Silhouex and that was the worst culprit, but it shoots GREAT! Very quiet and nice tight groups. I had some rounds of this not even extract though.

I've disassembled all my mags, cleaned, adjusted tension, etc - think it's time for a new extractor?

I was also thinking perhaps my extractor is not centered perfectly in the notch in the barrel - I'll try to adjust that first.

Try the Volq Exact Edge Extractor i hear that helps alot with stove piping. Also make shure you are using a dry lube for the bolt because the other stuff tends to collect alot of gunk and cause extraction problems. I'm kind of out of it and not thinking clearly :p But i'll get back to u with more ideas when i am.

I think my problem is my barrel alignment in the receiver - the barrel I have was VERY tight to install and I think I'm off just a bit.

I need to use a vise (which I don't have, have to use a buddy's) to tweek it a bit to get it lined up properly, but I'll fix it and I'll be testing it later today!

If your 10/22 is fairly new. Fire a brick of high velocity ammo thru it to smooth up the action. Use dri-lube (teflon) for lube. Get the Volquartsen extractor, it will help a bunch.

You are correct. If the barrel is rotated just a bit, the extractor slot will not line up with the extractor. Take care when torquing the v block that the barrel is aligned.

Hi guys, guess I've been away for awhile.

The last match I shot, my ruger had 7 stovepipes - it's a timed event so you can imagine the additional excitement it adds. I was using the Voltquartsen extractor and spring. MAJOR mistake!!! The Volquartsen extractor works great BUT use the stock Ruger extractor spring and plunger. The coils are heavier, much stronger, and won't weaken quickly. Try this test: take the bolt out, put a round on the bolt face and twirl it around to test the difference in springs. From my experience, ALL Volquartsen springs are garbage and should be avoided at all costs.

Problem solved and reliability restored! :sniper:

Well, I made some adjustments to my barrel - turns out it wasn't fully seated! I still need to tweek the extractor notch just a bit to have the extractor right in the middle. My barrel is so snug I have to put it in a barrel vise to adjust it.

I was out shooting today and only had a few stovepipes that I think are more magazine related than extractor issues. I had one mag that had NO stovepipes at all, using the Eley Silhouex ammo which was giving me the most problems! :D
