hey i just signed up. im proud to say i aquired my new mini 14 stainless w/ synthetic stock yesterday after lots of research. this site has tons of useful information. i plan to ad either a flash hider or muzzle brake, but am not sure of a couple of things.

-can i legally add a flash hider to a postban rifle as long as i permanently attatch it and i dont ad a folding stock?

-is a flash hider as effective as a muzzlebrake in reduding recoil and muzzle flip? does it reduce recoil but not muzzle flip?

-does a flash hider actually eliminate all muzzleflash?

-everybody on this site seems to like the blackwarrior brake, are there any other good ones, how about good flash hiders?

-about how much would a gunsmith charge to pin on one of these?
thanks a bunch for any help.

Welcome 196stainless14 :)

Individual states may differ in their laws, but I'm pretty sure you CAN NOT put a folding stock on a post ban mini regardless of any other features.

To be classified as an "assault weapon" it has the capabilty to accept hi-cap mags and has (2) of the things listed in the law, ie- a pistol grip stock and a flash hider. I went with a pistol grip, so I can not have a flash hider, but I may have a muzzle break.

From what I've heard, flash hiders do nothing for reducing recoil or muzzle flip, they may actually increase it. And they won't take away all the flash, just help to dissapate and reduce it.

As far as the pin on muzzle breaks, most of them are simple enough to put on yourself. I wouldn't spend the money to have a gunsmith do it.

As far as breaks are concerned, I own an AK74 style break from bushmaster. It doesn't come with a stainless finish, but I like the results that it produces. Also the AK style break's design is supposed to be the best at reducing muzzle rise and recoil.

Good luck with your future purchases

Federal law yes, state law-depends

No, because of design.

No it just dims it some, and only at night.

Many have the BW brake cause it commonly reduces groupage by 50%, Cheap $19.95, Easy to install, looks cool.
-about how much would a gunsmith charge to pin on one of these? Min. charge 30 min. $35 you furnish the brake, or you install it your self in 5 min. http://www.the-top.com/krink/assault_weapons_ban.htm
