I saw a comparision review in "Gun Tests" magazine. they compared a Russian SKS, an AK-47 and a Mini-30. They said the SKS was more accurate but that mini-30s were more available.
The sights on the 30 are better though and Russian SKS's are hard to come by.:( They were satisfied with all the rifles but had feeding problems with the 30 with an after market 40 rd mag, go figure.
I had a Romainian SKS which I sold to buy a Mini-14 and I prefer the Mini-30. After I shot the 30 I figured I would hardly ever use the SKS again.

Hi Tankcommander

What's your experience with the Mini 30 magazines? I understand that their are problems, have you had the same feeding problems as they have?

Have you had any mags that have worked without a problem? ( Mini 30 ) & what brand where they.

I've never shoot a SKS before.

Hey Gunrunner12,
So far I have only used Ruger 5 rounders, I have been searching the web for recomendations. My problem is I live in The Democratic Peoples Republic of New Jersey and we can't have anything over 15 rounds. I am in search of good 10 rounders,
since I don't want to be a guest of the state at worst or have my weapons and stuff siezed. One site recommended Cabella's and the price was reasonable.
The SKS was fun to shoot but it had old style notched rear sights toward the front of the receiver which made accuracy tough and I didn't want to invest a fortune in a $100.00 rifle.
I only got the Mini-30 in late Dec. have not had a lot of time to
experiment only had 1 range session but I loved it got a scope for it and can't wait to get it out again. I like it over the SKS it has a better feel to it

Well I can't comment on the mini-30"I only own a mini 14.As for SKS's,I have 2.Russian and Norinico paratroper"16.25" barrel"SKS's are fun,but not very accurate. The stocks are shorter length of pull than a mini."If you are 4 ft. tall it should fit you fine".I feel both actions as far as design for relablity are about the same. When the SKS's cost $100.00 they were a steal, but over $200.00 not such a deal.Changing the hi cap after market mag on a SKS takes a very long time"unless you have a SKS model D,which uses AK47 mags"A mini is far faster to change"most people use the stock 10 round fixed mag with stripper clips"The biggest trouble with the SKS is quality control, some countrys made them with forged steel recivers, some used stamped, some use threaded and pined barrels, some pressed. Its kinda a crap shoot with a SKS.With a mini you pay more but it has made in USA on it,and damn it that should be worth something!Aldo
