Just wondering if anyone has tried it, I have noticed that 7.62x39 ammo will load into a Mini 14 magazine but wanted to know if it works the other way around??

Was thinking of getting some mini 30 promag 10rds and seeing if they would hold, 14 or 15 .223's?

anyone tried it?

Hey Greg. Always someone trying to beat the system. Greg I admire you for thinking out of the box, so I got my reloading manual to check the OAL. The 223 Rem. is .060" longer, and .069" smaller in dia, than the 7.62 x 39mm. I believe the 223 bullets would be too long, and the mini-30 mag. lips wouldn't hold the 223. Also I'm wondering if the mini-30 mags are a few thou, wider. Lastly 10 rds of the 223 would only save you .69" or would only be 1 round more. Nice try. ;)

Nope. Tried it - failed.
The Mini-30 mags are wider on the back side, because the shells have a lot more taper than a .223 or 5.56x45mm. The mags ALMOST fit into the mag well.

Other way around, yes, a Mini-14 mag fits easily into a Mini-30, and even locks into place nicely. But it does not feed the round. The feed lips of the mag keep the bolt from going forward very far. It just nudges the round forward about 1/4".

Well thanks for your support, I tried my 10rd + 30rd project and it actually worked OK If I was a better welder and machinest I think I could have made a real reliable mag the problem is those cheap mags are sooo thin.

the mag works OK nothing you want to put your life on and its not going to win any beauty contests.

still needs some tweaking.
