Which would make a better defensive rifle the mini 14 or 30 with 10 round pro mags? This would be .223 vs 7.62 x 39 mm. The range would be 150 meters max and over penetration is not an issue. Thank you.

Both calibers are more than adequate for defense purpose, especially if overpenetration is not an issue. They would make great battle or survival rifles in a shtf scenario. One fact is the .223 round is easier to find in stores. I prefer the 7.62x39 round because it has more knock down power at closer ranges, under 125 yards, adequate for deer.

I'LL BITE MAKE MINE THE MINI 14 DUE TO THE FACT THAT NO BODY MAKES RELIABLE HIGH CAP MAGS FOR THE THIRTY BELIEVE ME I HAD ONE AND TRIED THEM ALL ALLWAYS GOT HANGS DUE TO MAG PROBLEMS. THE THIRTY HAS MORE PUNCH BUT IF U CANT FEED IT RELIABLELY THEN IT FAILS AS A DEFENSIVE WEAPON THE MINI 14 WAS NEVER PROBLEMATIC WITH MAGS UNLESS THEY WERE THE CHEAP TRIPPLE K OR USA BRAND.. I GOT RID OF MY SS MINI 30 AFTER A MONTH OF TRYING TO FIND RELYABLE MAGS FOR IT . THE CONCEPT WAS GOOD BUT WHAT KILLED IT WAS THE MAGS I'LL STICK WITH A MINI 14 IN .223 OR A 7.62 IN AN AK-47 THE MINI 30 WAS A DEAD ISSUE AS A DEFENSE WEAPON UNLESS YOU WANT 5 ROUND MAGS... NOT ME..... JUST MY .0002 CENTS WORTH

I have a Mini-30 and the 10 rd USA Magz work fine. I have several USA brand 30rd magazines coming in though soon and will inform all how those perform. Lastly a gunsmith I know (been around a while too.) uses mostly USA magazines in his mini-30s he sells and will insist that they are better magz. Oh well to each his own. Oh one last thing. I hear that the thermolds work great except they are expensive as all heck.

P.S. I forgot to mention. If you can find reliable Hi caps for the mini-30..definitely over a ak or a sks since they are lighter and quicker to bring up to fire.

I OWNED THE MINI 30 WHILE IT IS NICE, RELYABILITY ISSUE COMES TO FACTOR I TRIED ALL THE MAGS FOR THE MINI 30 AND NOT ONE WORKED CONSISTANTLY THERMOLDS INCLUDED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS IN MAGS NOT TO EACH HIS OWN ((FACTS)) OF COURSE MY OPINION IS STRICTLY PROFESSIONAL BEING A POLICE OFFICER AND EX SWAT TEAM MEMBER UNRELYABILITY WILL GET YOU KILLED. THEREFORE IF IT RIDES IN MY PATROL CAR IT MUST BE 100% NOT 50,60,80 OR 90% THE MINI THIRTY AS BADLY AS I WANTED IT TO PREFORM IT FAILED MISERABLY ..... THE MINI 14 ON THE OTHER HAND NEVER FAILED WITH FACTORY HIGH CAPS OR PMI MAGS ...AND THE AK IS THE BETTER WEAPON BARNONE OF THE TWO SHOULDERS BETTER AND IS 100% ALL THE TIME ......JUST FACTS NOTHING BUT FACTS.....

I own the MINI 30 and shoot it at least two or more times a week and own 25 USA 30 rd mags for it have used them all ,they all work fine no problems picked them out of a new case of mags even got to open the box up for the guy at the gun show 4 years ago he told to pick out any one I wanted and just picked them at random. So when I read this that and the other thing I just have to say nonsense. Just the facts jack.
