Guys,

My mini-14 about ever 40 shots the slide hangs up at the slide take down hole. It seems the slide go up into the hole (the one we use to take the slide off the rails) and the little tab underneith the slide jams just out of the track.

Do you think just welding the little tab a bit longer so it goes into the track deeper will sovle this, or do I need a new slide.

Thanks

Good Morning. Sounds to me as though the slide (op rod) has somehow been bent outward and the stress in that direction is the cause of the problem. Would suggest to take a straight edge to ck it or compare to a slide that operates normally.Poss bent outward during disassy? :usa: :ar15:

Welcome to the forum deaf smith. So we are on the same wave length ref. this schematic. http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp...el=1910zMINI-14

The slide assy #53 is guided, by the little tab along the receiver slide channel on #46, the guide rod #22, and the forend & stock cap assembly #16. Check to see if these parts are worn, bent or damaged. One of these parts may be the problem. Keep us posted.

cajungeo,

Yes we are on the same page, and nope everything seems ok as for being put together. I have set up an order to Brownells for a new slide (63 or so bucks) but have not mailed it yet. Now I do have a Brownells new recoil spring and it is a strong one.

I thought maybe just welding the tab just a bit to make it longer, so it could not jump up and wedge on the receiver, but not to long and I cannot get it in or out of the receiver! When it malfunctions the slide jumps out just at the top of the slide channel, and it barely just barely jumps out and wedges on the receiver. Just a pop on the handle and the rifle is back to running. Strange.

Now I have a 16.25 inch barrel INCLUDING FLASH HIDER (the flash hider is pinned and welded per ATF rules.) And the bottom of the flash hider is of the closed type (M1 Garand type front sight, M16 birdcage type flash hider.) Maybe the gas going up pushes that short barrel down and the slide, by inertia come up at the takedown notch in the receiver. Farfetched, but just a thought.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas.

You might concider sending it to Ruger for repair. I haven't heard of Ruger charging for repairs. It may save ya some bucks.

How about it guys, for anyone that has sent their Mini to ruger for repair, have they charged you for it?

Deaf Smith,

Sounds like the tab on the slide is worn. This is a common occurance with Garands due to their age. I have been told that the rods/slide can be rebuilt by welding a little bit onto the tab to bring it back into specs. When you get your new slide from Brownells compare the tabs on the two. Would be interested in the difference. Have you put many rounds through this gun?

cajungeo,

If it is rubing, it's doing it on the metal guide inserts. I'll see if that is it. Really, I like the fixed stock for shooting more than the folder (is is a Butler Creek Stainless Folding Stock.)

Anyway, for this particular rifle, I like it as is now. Indoor range, I tested it. 25 yards, standing, off hand, 1 to 2 inch groups with PMP South African ball. On the 100 yard outdoor range, it gives 7 inch groups, standing off hand. If I bench it, the groups are 3 inchers. This is with the stainless birdcage flashhider Bushmaster sells and a Eagle polymer peep sight replacment for the Ruger metal one (just drilled a bit for a better faster sight picture.)

The barrel with flashhider measures 16.25 inches (it's pinned and welded per ATF rules!) Mighty handy gun. And ramline 30 round mags work perfectly, even hold open the bolt! I also have a few Ruger orgional 20 rounders (one stainless!!!!) and Madson 10 rounders (one is a tight fit, but the other fits real well.)

I am totaly happy with my 'micro-14'. Sure glad it's back up and running.

Thanks guys.
